We recently installed glass doors into the side of the house so we can enter our greenhouse from the inside. It’s really helpful and all, but our bunny Russell has been scrabbling his claws and digging against the new glass doors. He’s already scratched it a great deal….and some aren’t so happy about it.  (That is, in case you haven’t realized… my hubby.) I don’t want to eliminate him from the downstairs, is there any way I could get him to stop the digging. Also, why is he doing this? Have any clue? Before it wasn’t funny we joked he was trying to get into the veggies….then he permanently scratched it, then it was more serious. As much as my hubby loves our rabbits, he’s threatened to keep them upstairs . That would be too much for me. (Plus, why should Min, Daisy, and Lily get punished? They never did anything. I’m voting for the girls!)

I read before that neutering will eliminate bad behaviors like digging or chewing things like couches and beds(or glass doors) Don’t know if this is true, of course. He’s neutered but still does this.

So, could anyone answer my strange question?

        Thanks.

Maybe he see’s his image in the glass and maybe he’s trying to get to the other rabbit….

I was thinking maybe you could cover the glass with something? Its tuff. Are they plain glass doors or do they have build in shades? I have had glass doors that had built in shades before. I wish I was better able to help you out. I understand the angry husband thing I have 2 bunnies who love to do bun-construction on things around the house like baseboards, beds and expensive workout equipment. I am guessing your bunny is trying to get out that’s what comes to mind. He just cant seem to realized he cant get out.
Hopefully someone else on here can be more helpful to you. I wish you luck!

This may sound crazy, but rabbits do not like the smell of vinegar, so a common deterrent is a spray of 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. I think you could spray it on the floor next to the glass, if you don’t want to fog up the glass at first, and see if it repels him from that area. Right now it’s a novelty to be explored, but if it has an unappealing scent, he may lose interest. I mean, the glass could be sprayed and window washed later, but maybe you don’t want to do that.
Also you can try putting something very appealing, like a willow tunnel or a few treats, somewhere away from the glass to distract him and make him think it’s much more rewarding in a different part of the room. The spray is often used for baseboards that get chewed, and it doesn’t stink up the room. It dissipates in the air, but his sensitive nose will still pick it up.

I’ll try the vinegar first, but if all else fails, we will have to get a curtain or shades of some type to cover it. Thanks for the advice. You just saved my bunnies from having to stay upstairs. We aren’t upstairs as often as downstairs, so that just wouldn’t be an option for me.

Right now we are using a puppy pen to block of the glass area, but it’s way too noticeable and we keep having to step over it. I’ll put vinegar on it right now while Russie isn’t around. Lol.
