I have the sweetest 6 year old mini rex house rabbit who got free this morning and hopped into my pantry, unbeknownst to me.  I found some chewed up books (dust jacket and actual book cover), and she managed to get to a package of chocolate chips and she broke into those too!

She has not been eating her cecotropes today, and really hasn’t eaten much else.  She seems a little sluggish, but I don’t know if I am over-analyzing or not. I know chocolate is dangerous to dogs, but is it also dangerous for a bun?  Should I take her to the vet?  Next time this room will be closed off, so she can’t sneak in while I am not looking.

Sorry if this is late. Chocolate is not safe for you’re buns. But a little won’t kill her. As long if she didn’t eat a whole candy bar ( in this case the whole bag of chocolate chips.) I think she will be fine. But if you are really scared for your bun, take her to the vet. Hope I helped a little. Is she okay now? Would love updates on the mini rex!

Chocolate is not as toxic to buns as to dogs and cats. Mice, rabbits and humans have a greater tolerance for chocolate and the toxic component in it, theobromine. So if it’s just a little chocolate, you don’t have to worry about that. But if she’s ingested a lot of non-food items, it could potentially cause blockage or gas.

Does she have any normal droppings? Sometimes if theyve eaten sth extra rich, they will have excess cecotropes and not eat all of them. If there are normal droppings (the round, pelleted poop) there’s no blockage as yet at least, but there could be gas if she is acting like she’s not comfortable. Keep monitoring her, give her hay and water and maybe massage her belly a little. Simethicone for babies can be given against gas. Keep us posted on how she does!

I wouldn’t worry too much. As long as the bunny is eating it’s hay they will be okay. I wouldn’t worry about the chocolate but I would be concerned if he ate any of the wrapping.

That naughty little bunny!  arg!  Thank you all for your responses, they were very helpful and appreciated.  I think she may have had gas, because her tummy was sensitive last night.  She is doing much better today, and seems to be back to her old self again.  She had normal droppings today and I even noticed pieces of the book cover in them, lol, so hopefully we are in the clear.  I was really worried about her.  Thanks again for your responses!  I attached a picture of her next to the book she chewed up and before she got to the chocolate.
