My 6 year old Holland Lop, Gizmo, has always been great at eating his hay. On Friday his brother and cage neighbor, Pongo, sadly passed away. Gizmo seems to be taking it relatively well…he is still eating and drinking water. I have noticed, however, that he isn’t eating much hay. He did finish the majority of what he had in the night, but today he has just nibbled on what I’ve given him. His favorite is Orchard Grass, but I also tried mixing some Timothy in there. Any ideas on how I can further entice him to be excited about his hay? Perhaps he will finish it off in the night again…who knows with him!

        Thank you!

Hey bunneh928 – So sad that Pongo left you, and I was wondering how Gizmo was coping. I’m in no way experienced in your situation to be offering advice, but from what I have read on other forums – I wouldn’t be too worried, at least not for the moment. I’m sure he is missing/wondering where his brother is too? Gosh, I hope this suggestion isn’t a super ‘no no’, (sorry BBer’s if it is) but someone once said to cut up (very small) a craisin and mix in the hay? (I was having problems getting my Henry to eat hay in the first place). And whether it was the smell or him eating the hay while trying to find his tiny treats, he did start eating his hay. Wishing you and Gizmo all the best at this very sad time for you both.

I actually thought of this same idea shortly after I posted! I am going to try hiding a treat or two tomorrow and see if that will get him digging. I’m not too worried though. He is still eating and drinking and has been super snuggly. He hops out of his cage every time I walk near and his cat brother has come in to visit him Thank you so much for the kind words. I don’t know what I would do without my Gizmo to keep me company these last couple days!
