So I’ve been wanting something easier to clean for Albert’s pen for a while.  I did have carpet remnant down and then a king size sheet over that but it was always so hard to clean and Al started peeing on it. Thank goodness he is getting fixed on the 27th!  I bought these foam mats since AL is not a chewer. Or so I thought! His cardboard castle is barely touched, he never chewed the sheet or any of the willow or apple sticks/wooden toys I tried to tempt him with. My needs are a bit different because Al needs to stay in his pen full-time so I wanted a floor he could binky on.  I could have done linoleum sheeting but then he would slip and slide everywhere.  Anyway, I digress.  He binkied like crazy when I put them down. He loves the floor…too much! He immediately dug and chewed at the stupid tabs! Ugh!! So now the 40 dollars I spent on what I thought was going to be a better solution might be wasted. Double ugh!!  Is there anything you can think of that would help me deter him from chewing? I have told him no, and he will stop for a bit and then continue.  It isn’t non-stop chewing. Just every now and then.  I am hoping he loses interest.  Right now I have a small tin with some coins in it that I gently shake when he goes to chew. That seems to stop him for the time being.  I really don’t want to replace the floor since I just bought it and can’t return it…but obviously I don’t want him chewing the crap out of it and ingesting the foam. Oh I was so excited.

Bunnies do explore new things with their mouths, like babies. How long have you had the flooring? Is he really eating it, or just chewing? How many times a day? I think you are doing it right with the coins in the jar. Could you rub some full-strength vinegar into the places he likes to chew? He may stop after his neuter.

I just put it down an hour or so ago. I have been sitting here watching him since. His digging and biting is getting more frequent. He has tried just about every single tab now so I don’t know if vinegar on every tab would work. Would it stress him out and not allow him to relax in his home? He stays in there full time so I don’t want him to not like being in there due to the smell. I will totally try it though if he would continue to relax and enjoy his home. Oh goodness.

It looks super adorable for what it’s worth! I’m sorry it isn’t working out ideally. :/

Is he chewing in particular spots or all over the place?

Edit: Maybe try some bitter apple or vinegar on the tabs. Something that would deter him from putting in his mouth but not lounging? I’ve also heard you can rub ivory soap on things to keep them from chewing.

Thanks! I thought it was cute too. LOL. Right now, I think he is tempted to test out every connection. Right now he is distracted by all the new hay in his litter box though ha! I’m sneaky like that. My fear is leaving him unattended over night.

Ok, I will try vinegar for now and maybe pick up some ivory soap tomorrow if that doesn’t work. Thanks!!

Ok, so far so good! the vinegar seems to be working. Funny thing is he was trying to lick it, but won’t chew! Yay! He was fine over night and I was gone all day today and he was fine too! Fingers crossed it stays this way! I just sprayed all the connections again for good measure. LOL

Yay! I’m glad he’s leaving it alone for now.
