Having 3 bunnies is great – but I have oodles of litter-boxes I use in all of the NIC cages and pens…they are all the corner-type litter boxes. The bunnies chew these up like CRAZY, and it gets expensive. What are some better options for litter boxes that last longer?I prefer ones I can fit a metal grid over so they don’t get urine all over their feet. (For specific brands just include a link to avoid advertising.) I need some bunnimom or bunnidad who has tried lots of different litter boxes before and have experience with their own bunnies. Thanks.

I use the plain old rectangular cat litter boxes – x-large from petsmart. To get a grid over them, I bought some hardware cloth from home depot, measured it out and folded the sharp ends over and filed them down a bit so the buns couldn’t cut themselves (all the poop stays on top of the grid, the pee goes into the litter, easy cleaning). The boxes were like $8 each and the hardware cloth cost about $10 for all three litter boxes and left me with enough to make a magazine holder for the bath room.

Corner boxes are really too small for bunnies most the time and can make litter training a hassle. Buns like to eat, lounge, etc in their boxes.

Edit: Note if you don’t want to make your own litter screens, BB store sells them too.

The corner litter boxes are rarely big enough – do your buns use them?

I’ve had a few with my girl Luna. First I got one from the website I buy my hay from and I thought it was pretty big…. but then she grew, haha!
Then I bought a large cat litter box which is fine, except the sides are slightly sloped so when she digs in it, all the litter and hay goes to one side, which can lead to her peeing over the edge of the box >
Then I got a huge under bed storage box to use which is great, and will be big enough for two, only problem is it uses so much litter which is expensive!

Unless your rabbits are particularly large like mine, I’d reccomend just getting the biggest cat litter box you can find

Thank you. I will look into cat litter boxes. The litter boxes I have now are actually fairly large and the rabbits like them, but they do like to chew them.

I’ll second the cat litter box recommendation… Depending on what type of litter you use, a grate might not be necessary. We use woodstove pellets and they are very absorbent, so standing in pee isn’t an issue.

If your buns are plastic chewers, they might chew any box you get, but the cat boxes are usually cheap enough that they can be replaced as needed. Another option are dollar store dishpans, the plastic on those are a bit thicker.

The corner litter box I’ve got is pretty huge, but it’s a cat corner litter box. No complaints from Fidget, anyway
