This is in reply to all of the people on the last forum about how I wanted to keep my bunnies outside, I actually convinced my mom buy letting her see the posts, she then convinsed my dad, and they will be kept in my Bonus Room. My dad said we could get the bunnies as soon as I have the money for bunnies and cage. I’ve seen lots of people using NIC Cages, how do they work? How big for 2 small/medium rabbits? I might want to consider 2 more rabbits (rescued, and spayed) down the road, can adults bond with adults? I just need to know more about keeping them inside.

We are going to the animal shelter as soon as I have the money. What do I need to look for? My dad said he was prepared for the expenses of vet bills, and food.

That is such wonderful news… It sounds like you have really awesome parents…
The NIC grids lock together and they can be configured to any shape or size… If you go to the BB home page under Bunny Info there is a section with pictures of various indoor set ups using the NIC grids…

I don’t even know what NIC stands for. I’m pretty sure that’s what people would call my set up, though. I always called them grids from storage cubes. That’s what they are, plus the plastic piece that holds them together. Then I also use zip ties to make it sturdier. Mine is 5 grids long, 2 grids wide, 2 grids high. The rabbits cannot jump out but a have a square of 4 grids at one end of the cage over the top. There is no little door to open for them to hop out because I live in an apartment and they cannot go on the carpet. I take them out from the top and they play on the couch (which is a material that I can wipe and disinfect). The bottom of their cage is a coroplast base which I ordered to fit from a guin
ea pig website. That is covered with a special fleece liner specifically made for the base which I also ordered. I have litter boxes for them but still take out the liner to wash when needed. I wash it at the laundry mat. This is the best set up I have found for them so far. If you would like to know where I got these from just let me know. I don’t want to come off as if I’m ”advertising” lol.

NIC stands for Neat Idea Cubes, which was the “original” brand name for the cubes. Now you can find them anywhere and with generic names, but the name stuck–kind of like kleenex and vaseline :p

If your rabbits will spend a significant amount of time in their cage, then they will need to have a large cage, but if you are able to rabbit proof and let them out every day, the cage doesn’t have to be as large. I think the guidelines for a rabbit cage is 2 by 4 for each average-sized rabbit (at the base) and an average sized rabbit I THINK Is considered 6 pounds.

My rabbits’ cage is quite a bit smaller than that (a little over 6 square feet at the bottom) and there is three of them in there, but I let them out to play often and they’re still happy rabbits. The only time I really had a problem was when I was bonding, and I couldn’t let them all out together–so that might be something to think about.

Adults can bond to adults and many of us on this forum have done it! However it’s a big process and you want to make sure you’re ready.
