        Hey guys,

This morning while I noticed a small red spot on the back of Pickles’ left foot.  I noticed that he naturally does have thin fur kind of like a combover on the back of his heels but this time I think on his left foot he might be starting to develop sore hocks.  He is still active and eating and binkying all morning but this is the only picture I was able to get of it before he ran off.

I know sore hocks spread rapidly if left untreated .. is there’s anything I can do to further prevent the spreading since I think it is still in the very early stages.  I read that there are certain ointments that I can put on him or wraps or do epson salt soaks, etc.  What do you guys suggest/think?

That seems to be a normal callous to me. Does it seem angry or inflamed? Or just a light pink spot? It’s totally normal for bunnies to have a hairless calloused area on their hock, and it’s only really a concern if it’s inflamed and/or infected.

.. in Canada I don’t think we have Neosporin .. if we do I wasn’t able to find it. I did put some Polysporin (complete) on it though.. I’m not sure if it would help at all..

It might be possibly the beginning of sore hocks, but since bunnies put most of their weight on their back feet for most of their lives it is normal to be reddish/white calluses like Elro said. Try to minimize hard rough surfaces, keep things very soft for your bunnys feet as much as you can. My vet recommended some vitamin e capsults, just puncture the pill and rub the liquid on twice a day to add some moisture to it. Don’t soak you buns feet as my vet said wet feet will make the problem worse if they hop on rough surfaces.

We do have neosporin in Canada but it’s the same thing as polysporin, both are fine (just make sure you don’t use the one with a pain reliever in it!)

I wouldn’t worry at all though, that looks like normal bunny callous, you can put polysporin on though, it won’t hurt to keep an eye on it

That’s normal. My bunny had the same thing and it went away after a few weeks. But what I did to prevent it from happening again was put i fleece in her cage and switched her water bowl to a heavier one so she couldn’t throw it around as wet surfaces can also cause sore hocks

My bunny had something similar to that. I realized that his plastic flooring was just too hard, and got him some comfy bath mats and hay mats instead. I noticed as well that the ramp in his cage was causing some irritation when he was running up it. I covered the ramp in fleece. Once I made these adjustments, my bunny’s feet cleared up quickly! Just examine all surfaces and make sure they have some give. Very hard surfaces are unnatural for a bunny to spend a lot of time on. Also, clip your bunny’s nails. When I adopted my bunny his nails were so long that he was unable to balance his weight evenly and they began to get irritated. Good luck!
