Over Christmas, some of my family has given me some products to use for the rabbit, and while I know they mean well, they aren’t products that I would have chosen to use. One is a bedding: Clean Comfort, Small Pet Bedding – “Cupcake” coloured. It says “99.9 dust free” on the package, so that’s not my concern, but it also says “Odor Control Guaranteed”. It also says on the back that consumption of the product should be avoided. I’ve always been under the impression that rabbits should be allowed to eat their bedding/litter.

Also, someone gave me a 4-pack of treats to clip onto the side of a cage. They’re those bars of assorted seeds. I’ve always avoided seeds in the past because they’re not good for rabbits, but are they just junky, or are they actually unsafe? I don’t mind giving her junk-food every once in a while, but I of course don’t want to cause health problems.

I felt that this fit under habitats and toys, but I don’t mind if the post needs to be relocated.

Hi LopLove – don’t give Tiger the seeded bars! I bought 2 for Henry, he ate the first one before I knew better and threw the second one out when I knew better, lol. Sorry.
The bedding I have no idea about – as you know I use the newspaper and shredded paper (not the best, but it works for us). But I’m sure others will know….. Happy New Year!

Thanks Henry! Don’t apologize, I just feel bad not putting gifts to use. XD But I’d prefer it over hurting my girl. And yeah, I use “Yesterday’s News” litter and aspen shavings, so I’m not 100% sure about the new bedding either. :/ It feels soft and squishy, and it clumps in a way that reminds me of packing snow, but each individual piece looks like a small shredded piece of tissue paper. It’s so different to me. I don’t know what to make of it.

The bedding sounds like Carefresh – you really don’t want your rabbit to eat any bedding if possible. I imagine that warning is on all bedding regardless. I think it would be fine actually.

The carefresh-stuff is probably fine, I sometimes use care fresh for my buns, they never try to eat it. Ditto on not using the seed bars, but you could probably hang them outside for the birds.

Generally the seeds would just be considered “junky”. Having a whole bar of them that the bunny can eat all at once? Yowza! That can’t be good at all. Keep in mind that some seeds are dangerous because they can cause an impaction in the bunny’s intestinal tract. LEL has the right idea, give it to the birds outside.

Sarita and LEL: The brand is “Clean Comfort”. It reminds me of Carefresh, but I thought Carefresh was clumpier? This stuff is small and thin (almost like cotton-y tissue paper). As long as that kind of texture wouldn’t be more appealing to a bun, I’d like to give it a go.

LEL and LBJ10: Thanks for the clarification between what’s junky and what’s dangerous. I like the idea of giving the seeds to the birds; that will make them happy.

My grandma would do the same thing buy toys that I didn’t think were good. So the next year I told her why don’t I go with you and we can pick them out together. Then my grandmother would just get me gift cards.

LopLove – It isn’t all seeds, but I guess some have a hull or coating on the outside that bunnies can’t digest.

kamdynandsunshinesmom: lol, I’m wondering if I’ll be in the same boat for next year. XD

LBJ10: Thanks, I’m glad you told me.
