I have a mini rex, spayed, she has had what I suspected was a uti, took her to the vet, put her on antibiotics, 1x a day for a week, didn’t totally clear up, so prescribed 10 more days of antibiotics 2x a day. I quit the antibiotics on the 6th (?) day, because it cleared up as in she wasn’t have pee accidents outside the litter box. Then a couple days went by, she started having accidents again, so I suspect I should have finished out the antibiotics. So I start giving antibiotic again, 1x a day, 2 days. Today, at midday, she started sleeping in her litter box and I am very worried because while I understand this is normal for rabbits, this is not normal for this particular rabbit. I have never seen her do this. She did eat her treats earlier in the day and seemed to be just fine, until midday, continually resting in her litter box. What do you guys think?

Yes, you always want to finish out what the vet prescribes.

I don’t think I would panic though – just observe her and see if there are any other changes but just one change in behavior may not be a problem. Basically just wait and see.

You may need to go back to the vet and get more meds, as the break might have caused the infection to flair up again and two days might not be enough. As far as the sleeping in the litter box, mine never did it until a few weeks ago so not sure that would be a clear sign of illness. I do think going back for a check is a good idea though since the meds were stopped early and symptoms have returned. I would be more worried about the lethargy rather than the actual spot she is picking to rest in. I hope she feels better soon but it does sound like a vet visit is in order to me.

Thank you Kbana. The vet is in tomorrow, I will take her then unless she is still lethargic tonight I plan on going to E.R. I really appreciate your advice

I think the issue was cutting it cold, even if they vanished I would at least call the vet and see what they thought about slowing it down (like going back to once a day)

But ya like Kbana said I would check with the vet again since it returned with you cutting it short

The two events could also be unrelated… She might be having a mini stasis episode or gassiness that just happens to be on the tail end of this infection.

In either case, I agree to keep an eye on her and see how she fares through today. My mini rex also only lays in her litter box when she’s under the weather, normally she’s an in and out type of girl.

Thank you Beka. Someone in the herd does have some diarrhea. It could very well be her. Thank you so much for your response.
