Hi all!  Simba is about 5 months old and is an alfalfa-holic. As a flemmie I think he (or she – we’ve had conflicting opinions) will probably stay with alfalfa for a few more months to support his growth, but I have also tried to get him to nibble hay and he won’t touch it. He prefers alfalfa over everything – including veggies! So my question is… when do I start the switch away from 100% alfalfa and any suggestions on how to keep him from having a hissy fit when I do?

If he’s getting the alfalfa pellets you should go ahead and switch him over to regular hay. I don’t know how to stop a hissy fit though :~)

I wouldn’t worry about that too much. Hunger always trumps a hissy fit. Especially with a big eater like a Flemmie!

Thanks guys! We’ll start the switch. Slowly.

Could you try mixing his alfalfa with timothy and only give him more hay when he has eaten the timothy since most likely he will pick out the alfalfa first? Then you could increase the timothy ratio over time? Like the others have said, eventually he will eat what he is given I would think…
