So, my little bun Alfie loves to eat but my only concern is the pellets I am feeding him. I purchased DuMor Advanced Diet Pet Rabbit food for him but I’m just wondering if it’s a good choice. Hopefully someone can respond, thanks!

I have never heard of it. I tried googling it and just got horse/goat/pig feed.

I am not an expert on this, but you can look at the feed and decipher its contents based on the percentages of protein and fiber. I believe the fiber percentage should be higher than the protein percentage. I have it in one of my rabbit books I just cannot find it at the moment. However, as a general rule, I think any brand is really just fine. Pet food undergoes rigorous testing and I have never had a vet recommend a specific type of rabbit pellet. Sorry I can’t be of better help, hopefully someone else will respond and knows better

Maybe this will help. Can you compare this to the package?

              Recommended Nutritional Value
              Fiber 18% minimum (20 -25% best)
              Fat 1 – 2% max
Protein 12 – 14% max (long-haired breeds may need higher)
              Calcium 1% max

The pellet should be timothy-based, not alfalfa.

My vet recommended Oxbow. Young rabbit food for now, and my next bag will be the adult. He said if I found it hard to read/understand the labels as LBJ10 suggested above – the Oxbow would take the worry out for me as it is a trusted nutritional brand. I’ve heard of BBer’s using other wonderful brands that I haven’t heard of – my purchasing power is a little restricted as I live in a bunny banned state. So lucky for me my vet is super rabbit savvy! Otherwise, my only other option (as I said, I am restricted on choice) was a nasty pellet with no nutrition, and I wouldn’t have known the difference if he hadn’t explained it to me at the time. Cheers.

I couldn’t find anything on the In the DuMor Advanced Diet Pet Rabbit pellets. But in the US some good pellets for adult rabbits are:
Oxbow Essentials Adult, Oxbow BeneTera, Kaytee Timothy Complete Adult, Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health Adult, Sweet Meadow Timothy Pellets, Zupreem Timothy Naturals, and Zupreem Nature’s Promise.

These fall a little outside of the recommendations but are still good:
Oxbow Natural Science, American Pet Diner Timmy Rabbit, Purina Fiber3 Rabbit Chow, and Sherwood Maintenance.

Is the Dumor food you purchased a plain pellet or the one type that has junk in it like seeds and stuff like that? You don’t want to feed your rabbit that type of pellet. I have to admit I buy one type of Dumor pellet but mine is a plain pellet. both my rabbits were being fed that before I got them and they love it. However I mix it with Kaytee Timothy complete. They only get a small amount of it. MoveDiagonally has listed some great pellets to slowly switch too if you decide to. I really liked the Oxbow Bene Tera but my youngest wouldn’t eat it.

It says “Vitamin Enriched Deluxe seeds, grains, fruits and vegetables”  As you said to avoid that stuff, can I take out the stuff and just give him the pellets? They are Timothy based and I don’t want to waste this full 10 lbs. bag

Thanks  Hopefully it’s okay to finish this bag first, and then get those.

Pellet mixes are not good for bunnies at all. You want a plain pellet. Honestly, I would start switching off the DuMor ASAP. It’s way too low in fiber and much too high in fat.

I would pick out the junk food (seeds and stuff) and start mixing with a new healthier pellet:
Week 1: 3/4 old pellets, 1/4 new pellets
Week 2: 1/2 old pellets, 1/2 new pellets
Week 3: 1/4 old pellets, 3/4 new pellets
                            Week 4: All new pellets

The soonest I can get new pellets is Thursday

Don’t fret too much Alfienut a couple more days will likely not hurt him. I would just pick out the junky extras (Seeds, dried veggie or fruit, ect) until you can get a healthier pellet and start mixing/switching.
