Two bonded sweet, happy, charming, friendly, and beautiful bunnies need a good home. I never intended to give them up but I am starting school in Australia and moving this February. As I had the misfortune to learn, pet rabbits are not allowed to enter the country. And now, with a lot of heartache, I must part with them.
A little bit about them:
As a couple, they are so much fun to watch. They keep close contact with each other and keep the other’s coat neat, clean and tidy (they groom each other a lot ). And you’ll just have to see for yourself the adorableness of Lola and Jimmy running around, running into each other and running into you when they catch on that lettuce, broccoli, pellets or some other delectable treat is on its way.
Lola (Miss Lola)
Approximately 5 years old
Has lived with me for 3 years
Spayed
Great with the litter box
Sweet and loves to be pet
Jimmy (Mr Jim)
Approximately 5 years old
Has lived with me for 2 years
Neutered
Good with the litter box
Sweet and shy
If you are willing to open your heart to these precious creatures you will not be disappointed.
I am also happy to provide you with all items I have for them (water/food dishes, litter box, toys, etc). We’re located in West Los Angeles, California
Welcome to BB jelatter2! You have some very cute bunnies there.
Unfortunately we do not allow people to rehome rabbits in the forums. For the full rule text:
Rehoming Rabbits : Our forum cannot be used as a resource to rehome your bunny. The Rescue section is meant for Rescues and Shelters, and Fosters from a Rescue/Shelter only. However, you can ask about how to deal with some of the challenges that are making you consider rehoming. Our main goal will be to find solutions so you can keep your bunny. If you are an individual who may be in a situation where you are not sure what you should do with a challenging situation – moving, new baby, busy schedule, etc, we can help you find solutions in the Q & A Forum.
Can I ask what country you are moving from? I’ve found some sources that said rabbits can be moved from New Zealand into Australia but if you’re in another country (not New Zealand) then your options are very limited and re-homing might be your only option. :/
Have you thought about contacting a local rescue to see if they can assist you in finding homes for them?
Best of Luck!
You must be devastated! I am so sad for you and your babies! They both look so beautiful and loved. I’m curious too, which country are you moving from? and which state in Australia are you moving to? Cheers jelatter2.
I apologize. I didn’t see that rule. There is no way for me to keep my rabbits. I am moving from the US to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Should I delete my post? The sad thing is that I am moving to go to veterinary school
No, I think you should be ok – MD would have dealt with it, I also think it may be a good reminder for others. If it needs to be removed I’m sure BB will make contact. In the meantime, how cool your going to vet school! Such a shame your buns can’t make the trip with you. But I’m sure you will only pass them onto another loving home and that’s what’s most important.
Melbourne, Australia in February…. from the icy cold snow – good luck with that! Bring a bikini and tank top – that’s all you’ll need! It is super hot here now (as I wipe the sweat off my brow) and February is the worst month. Good luck with everything! and enjoy Australia.
Cool, I’ll just wait and see what I’m told to do I’m feeling very frantic about this. I’m so scared I won’t find anyone. I couldn’t stand the thought of them in a shelter.
February is super hot, huh? Good to know. But then… winter
Australia is VERY strict about animals. They’re an island that’s separated from most diseases and would like to keep it that way. It’s great for the animals there, but horrible when you move sorry to hear, and hope you find a good home for these 2!
edit;; if you happen to be in Alaska I could take them on but really only if your in Alaska
Hi Jelatter,
OK…I am in Australia and I can assure you with the exception of one state you can bring rabbits into the country… Unfortunately if you are heading for Queensland they prohibit them unless they are being used in live performances such as Magicians props. (at least they also prohibit them as lab animals)
Can you tell me what state or city you are moving to ? I’ll try and get you some more info, I know I looked it up for someone recently.
OK…Just saw that it is Melbourne you are moving to… There might be a quarantine period but I am sure there is no law preventing you bringing your bunny to Melbourne Victoria. We already have the two primary rabbit diseases and they were introduced intentionally by our own agricultural department…. They are only banned from Queensland because they are classed as a feral animal here due to the large introduced wild population. Let me do some hunting but start checking with your vet and airline as i am fairly sure they can come with you.
WOW Roberta – Good on you! Who knew, not me! Wouldn’t it be lovely if she can bring them with her….
My question, if they are allowed, don’t they have to spend a lot of time in quarantine?
Not Necessarily, things have changed a lot of the years with pet passports and vet check records… The primary concern for dogs and cats is rabies as we don’t really have it here…. Sent an enquiry off to a pet travel site just waiting for word back, mean while I am going to try and back track and find the info I dug up for some one previously.
i take back everything i ever said about crocodile dundee
Thanks guys! I searched the APHIS site and all I got from it was that meat and performance rabbits could be brough into the country. The one exception is that they can travel between New Zealand and Australia. That doesn’t mean I didn’t read it wrong I will check around some more
I will keep this up as the goal of the post has changed and Roberta and others seem to be able to assist in giving important info that may help the member keep her bunny. But for future reference for other members, this kind of post is normally not allowed. We do not assist in rehoming rabbits via the forum.
Helloworld!!
Thanks BB, Just waiting on some responses to a volley of email queries…. Hopefully should have something concrete tomorrow (Aussie Time)
Not good news I’m afraid.. They are restricting rabbits from any where but New Zealand…. The best I can tell, as they do not carry any diseases that the DAFF has not already introduced themselves, is that bunnies in Australia cannot be vaccinated for Myxomitosis as they can be in other countries… They have this idea that if a domestic bun that has been vaccinated gets released into the wild it will breed mutant bunnies that are resistant to the diseases they have released to cull the feral population.
So the next step is to find a shelter in your area to help rehome them or find a friend or family member that is willing to take them on until your return (yes, I know that is likely to be several years)
What state are you in, I thought I saw CA but can’t seem to locate it again…
Hey Roberta, great job on your research! Shame it wasn’t a positive outcome, but at least we all know now.
Would you believe just a couple of weeks ago Bam (from Europe) told me all about the Myxomitosis vaccine and how we Aussies can’t access it! How cool she knew, and I (who live here) didn’t!
Like you, I’ll keep everything crossed that jelatter2 can find a loving home for them while she is in Oz.
Interesting that even NEUTERED & SPAYED rabbits can’t come. They won’t be breeding with the wild population.
Sorry to hear, and hope you find a good home
Good point CBL! Seriously, does common sense ever come into the decision making? But I’m sure there’s more to it than that, or at least I hope so???? Doh!
The laws are nonsense for all those reasons….. Besides our feral bunnies have already started to develop an immunity.. The complete hypocracy of it all is they will allow lab animals, magicians rabbits and large breeds for meat farming, I’d say there is a bigger risk with those rabbits.
Now the priority is to help find a shelter or come up with ways that these little buns can find a new home….. I am wondering if it’s possible for one of the shelters to provide a long term foster……
I’m not suggesting doing this but I was wondering academically. Can you bring a rabbit into New Zealand and then from there travel to Australia with them? Do you have to be a resident of New Zealand? Again, I’m just curious. Not suggesting someone try it as it would likely be quite expensive even if it was viable.
Edit: Nevermind. It looks like NZ only lets rabbits in from Australia. Hm. Interesting.
I was pondering along similar lines, was going to check the NZ regulations tonight.. there are agencies that actually sort out transportation internationally for pets and I think if it’s doable they would know a way.

I’ve been researching this myself as I’m looking at emigrating to NZ when I finish uni in a few months.
Rabbits can only be brought into Australia from New Zealand…. and they can only be brought into New Zealand from Australia!
It’s such a pain
I can’t see why not? New Zealand imports (lets say) veggies from China then send them to Australia marked “product or made in New Zealand”!
Super dumb! So why should a bunny be any different? Sorry for getting off track, but to prove a point – I don’t buy anything made/produced etc., in New Zealand, cause you don’t know where it came from to begin with?

Hey Roberta, great job on your research! Shame it wasn’t a positive outcome, but at least we all know now.

I’m sorry for the outcome here. I thought Oz was a makebelieve place in an old movie???????
Ha ha hah Velvet, I read your post about 5 times and I didn’t get the joke – doh! Got it! Yes, we Aussies call it Oz! Why? Who knows, we just do. Maybe cause we’re to lazy to say the whole word? Don’t worry, I’m not walking around in a pair of sparkly red shoes….. Lol!
Edit/Add – I just told my hubby who had a laugh at me, good on you! He reminded me…. Our thing is “Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi”! (Which I knew). Then during the Olympics (he thinks – years & years ago, too long for him to remember) it became Ozzie Ozzie, etc., and it came from there, and we just stuck with it. I don’t give it a second thought, why I didn’t get the joke to begin with, silly me. You gave us both a great laugh – thank you! For my fellow Ozzies, if we are wrong, please correct me. Cheers!
I’ve heard of California being called “The Land of Fruits, and, Nuts,” before, but Oz is a new moniker…………..I’ll have to remember THAT, lol.
Haven’t heard that one either (California), gosh you make me laugh! Yes, remember Oz! (Oi Oi Oi!). Cheers Velvet.
Yup, but Ozzy was actualy British I believe. But, I think the Osbornes was filmed in USA????????????????
OK, that’s enough thread stealing sorry!
Do you have to do anything to prove that your rabbits are magician props or performance rabbits?
Would just claiming that you and your rabbits are free-lance performers change anything?
Would bringing your rabbits to children’s birthday parties qualify as “performing”? Because I think that would be a fairly easy task to carry out as either freelance work or part-time work if you were actually required to follow through with that kind of claim.
What if you volunteered to bring your rabbits to hospitals as the means for pet therapy?
Hi LopLove, for the bit of info Roberta (isn’t she awesome) was able to pass onto me previously (cause as you know in my part of Australia bunnies are illegal), yes, you would have to get a license/register and it is very very hard, and if not successful I would lose Henry (destroyed) and risk a fine in the tens of thousands of dollars – so I decided against it. The risk is way to high! Our secret to not being caught – we tell no one! Only family (which is very small), we haven’t even told friends. (Why I am on this site ‘all the time’ lol…. so I can bunny talk!). When we do have visitors, Henry is usually under the bed (nap time) and because he doesn’t like strangers if he is up, he goes into his house (not even locked in) and we cover it with a towel (then use the guinea pig line). Even when we buy his Oxbow rabbit food, hay, etc., we pay cash – not card. And our exotic vet, we trust him 110%, he can see we are responsible and care for Henry, and I’m sure that is his only concern. Actually, here’s one for you…. we went to get a refill on Henry’s food yesterday and the pet shop that we have to drive 30 minutes away ran out of Timothy (so I bought Botanical and Orchard), so it proves that there are plenty of illegal bunny owners in my extended area, yet I haven’t heard of one!
PS LopLove – can you imagine my Henry hopping all over everyone visiting hospitals, ha hah! No chance!
And Velvet, let me assure you, we are not chanting over Ozzy Osbourne? Ozzie was just a different way to spell Aussie. Still laughing though!
OH, when ya did the oi oi oi, I thought it was the begining of going off the rails on a Crazy Train! lol
Hey, nothin wrong with the Blizzard of OZ!
