I heard my rabbit,Houdini sneeze about 5 times in a row.should I be worried?? also, we just found a flea on my dog… Can rabbits get fleas? And what should I do about the fleas because my rabbit lives in the family room on the tile right next to our chinchillas! Any advice on either subject?

If he isn’t still sneezing, then he could have just gotten something up his nose. And yes, rabbits can most definitely get fleas. Whatever you do, do not use Frontline to treat! It is toxic to rabbits. Make sure you use something rabbit-safe like Revolution. If you have chinchillas then you need to make sure your rabbit doesn’t have pasteurella. Rabbits can have it and show no signs, but can be deadly to chinchillas if they get it.

LBJ: wow thank you so much!! What exactly is pastuerella? How do I go about getting it checked? Also, do they make special rabbit revolution? Or just buy the small kitten or puppy kind? Thanks so much!!

Also does pasteurella hurt my rabbit?!

Pasteurella is a bacteria. Many rabbits have it and it causes no problems at all. It can sometimes be symptomatic. It is treated with antibiotics. The vet can do a culture to see if any grows from a nose swab. A negative result doesn’t guarantee they don’t have it, but it would give you a better idea. There are a lot of concerns with housing chinchillas and rabbits in close proximity, that’s why I brought it up. They don’t ever can contact do they?

No, LBJ they never come in contact. I will take a picture of their quarters if you want. I’m about to let the chinchillas into a different room to play. During the day, when they are sleeping they are in what I call”day cages” and considering they are nocturnal, and VERY HYPER, we let them have their play time after they eat when they wake up. They have separate pens in separate rooms. But the chinchillas day cages and Houdinis full time cage and pen are next to each other. I’ll post a picture if that could give you a better visual!

They don’t recommend allowing them to have contact, so if you’re keeping them separate then things might be okay. The bacteria is spread through direct contact mostly. It can live for a little while if there is something moist like dirty litter or something.
