I am house sitting for a friend this week and have permission to bring Ralphie with me. It’s ideal because their house is very close to my job an I wouldn’t have to drive back and forth all day taking care of their pets and my own. I want to make a pen out of NIC grids and have an idea of where to start but I am stuck on flooring. It’s obviously meant to be temporary so it needs to be easy to disassemble as well. Any ideas? Does anyone have a setup like this?

I would just buy a cheap piece of linoleum. Also, what type of nic pen are you making? I would make it with zip ties so that it would fold up like an xpen.

yes i planned on using zip ties because he likes to rocket about the cage and i don’t want it to collapse THAT easily lol. I don’t really know anything about “types” of nic pens, but I plan on clipping a sheet over it so he cant jump out. i’m not gonna fashion a door because i don’t have the time to work it out so i need to be able to reach in from the top.

If it’s a temp set up I don’t know if I would go for sheet vinyl unless you can find a free scrap somewhere. Maybe a cheap plastic shower curtain? That would protect any floor under the pen and you can put anything over it.

i actually took your advice and bought a shower curtain. made a 4X4 pen secured with zip ties, i secured one side with binder clips for a door. i covered the shower curtain liner floor with a fleece blanket. hung a towel over the top and secured with binder clips i case he turns out to be an escape artist. i definitely need to improve my design but it will work for the few days we are here. I am just glad I am able to keep him with me I will post pictures of it later so everyone can see.

Do be careful that he doesn’t dig up the shower curtain and eat it, that could be very dangerous.

he isn’t a digger (i’ve tried EVERYTHING to bring out that side of him!), and has plenty of wood toys he can chew. one of the best parts about him is he prefers the texture of wood toys over anything so i don’t have much of a chewing problem. his fleece blankets have been untouched since the day i bought them. the purpose of the curtain was to protect the carpet so i put the fleece over the curtain and he cant reach the edges.
