        hi

Can I put my hay straight into the bin or am I supposed to keep it in the bag it came with?

Um, it depends on what you bought? For eg., my Oxbow hay I keep stored in it’s bag in my pantry. But previous to that, I bought a bale of grassy hay and it came in nothing and way huge, so it is stored outside in a ‘vented’ timber storage box under cover. I bought that months ago, and because he doesn’t eat it, doh!, why we bought the Oxbow (we still use it for him to lay in) and it’s still going good.

I have stored mine in a wicker hamper but now I have 2 rabbits I buy more hay so I store mine in a plastic storage bin with a lid that I punched a bunch of holes out of it so the hay gets airflow. I store that in the closet in the rabbit room it seems to be keeping nicely thus far. You could try either of those options.

I use a plastic bin (two actually, our bales are usually too big for one) as well. My husband drilled holes in them for airflow.

I also use mesh laundry containers. They are good with regards to air flow.

Sorry, for not responding after a while. I forgot about this thread after I got really sick. Thanks for all the responses. I have a plastic bin as well, should I then poke holes on the top and then put my hay in or can I put it in without poking holes?

                    Thanks all

I would poke holes – my recently went moldy while in the plastic container

Did it come in a cardboard box – that’s what I store my hay in.

It actually comes in a big bag. I’ve been keeping it in there, but the bag tends to rip very easily and makes a big mess. Since I already have a plastic bin, I guess I will just poke holes in the top and use it. Thanks all of you!

After mine got moldy, we went back to Oxbow. So now we use the cardboard box as well. You could always get a cardboard box that fits the bag and put the bag inside the box (kind of how Oxbow packages theres.

I buy Organic hay by the bale from a local farmer, and store it either in a plastic bin with holes drilled in it for air circulation or up on a pallet. The first few times I used a plastic bin, without air holes, and noticed that the hay would mold quickly. So, I drilled a few holes in the top and sides of the bin, and have not had a problem since.

Mine comes in a cardboard box. It works very well!

So about how big should the holes be in the plastic bin?
