I’ve only had my Bilbo a few weeks and he does not like being handled, at all. I’ve tried holding him in different ways to see if he’s just uncomfortable being held a certain way, my friends who are experienced in bunny care have tried but he just kicks out, often leaving us with bad scratches. So we’ve accepted that we won’t be able to hold and snuggle him, which is fine because other than that he is a very affectionate and relaxed bun.

However I recently noticed that his glands are plugged and therefore need to be cleaned out asap. My problem is that he won’t let me hold him long enough to even get a good look at his glands, never mind clean them. I’ve tried wrapping him in a towel to calm him, turning him on his back and neither have worked.

        Any suggestions?

        Thanks!

The only way I can do anal glands is to get my husband to hold the bunny “baby burping style” and I sort of lift up the tail and do it that way. Not a pleasant job for anyone, that’s for sure. This is the same way we hold the bunnies for nail trimming.

If your bun is super difficult and you are scared he will jump out of your arms, your best bet is to have the vet do it. He/she may be able to show you the best way to do it for your bunny.

I just cleaned out both of my ladies. I cradle them like a baby in one arm so I can get a firm grasp then I take the q-tip all ready to go with petroleum jelly in one hand, and with the other hand I gently separate the glands apart so I can swab out. It takes patience but it’s doable. I let them sort of rest in the crook of my arm so my hands are free.
