I have had my bunny since he was 5 weeks old. He is 9 months now…and although he is a very loving, energetic, good boy…I JUST CANNOT LITTER TRAIN HIM!!! He poops and pees all over the place. He’s not neutered yet (soon he will be) so his hormones are also playing a part in my apartment needing a good cleaning after his daily playtime

I tried everything..placing the litter box around various places, more than one litter box, placing hay and food in them etc etc. Nothing works with him. He even pees and poops in his water dish..so I gotta clean that out at least 3 times a day. Help!!!

The reason you can’t litter train IS because he is not neutered!

Once neutered, your rabbit will probably catch on to the hang of litter training quite quickly. Because of the hormones still raging inside him, he still feels the need to spray, mark everything as his, and urinate everywhere. It’s VERY typical and normal behavior for un-neutered males and females.

How long until he’s neutered? I have had many young’ns in my day and I feel your pain. It can be incredibly frustrating but unfortunately, unless you get really lucky you will be riding out his bad litter habits until neutered. BUT the good news is this is most likely the culprit so it may be a very simple fix (as soon as he’s neutered!)

EDIT:  It can also take up to a month until he’s neutered for all those hormones to wear off – so be extra sweet and understanding with him until they do!

Also, how big is his area? Rabbits are funny in that having too small of a cage makes the whole thing a “litter box”, but also too big of an area can cause then to mark. You might have to experiment to find what works with him.

Is it only an issue during exercise time or also when he’s caged?

I’d also like to know about his cage setup. What type of litter do you use? Have you tried various types? Do you have anything else lining his cage?

              Also, what size/style litterboxes?

He has the Living World red & white cage. It’s a suitable size since he’s a dwarf and he gets lots of free run of the apartment (one long & wide open concept room. He’s not allowed in our bedroom & bathroom though. And not in the kitchen area. At least I was able to train him on that) so it’s not like he’s in there all day. We don’t like caging him and he hates it too (wish we could get a pen..but no suitable space for it). He poops and pees all over the cage too. Including the water bowl (he doesn’t like the bottle). Funnily..doesn’t do it on his hay pile. Or on top of the hut (which he treats like a bed).

Litter is Carefresh. He seems to be fine with it. Doesn’t like me cleaning it out :p He will be neutered on…2nd week of January I believe (can’t remember the exact date right now. Husband made the appointment)

Is the hay pile over the litter?

What’s on the base of his cage?
Most prefer it bare but some rabbits have towels or mats. Many have strong desire to toilet on absorbant materials.

The X-Large sized one? It’s the only version of that cage which meets the minimum size recommendations. Small – Medium sized rabbits are recommended to have about 4’X2′ or 8 sq ft of cage space. Another way to measure is that a bunny should be able to hop 3 times in one direction without having to turn around.

I second Jersey’s question about flooring. What’s it like?

I think everyone is giving you great advice but it’s likely you won’t be able to litter train him until after he’s neutered. Something to keep in mind about that as well is that for 4-6 weeks his behaviors might actually seem to get worse. This is very normal and is caused by his hormones going haywire as they dissipate/level out. It’s also usually very temporary!

Once he is neutered, he will train himself.
Are you using the carefresh for bedding and for litter? Mine doesn’t like that. We use a different litter (recycled paper pellets, petsmart brand) and carefresh natural for bedding.
