I have a 3 y/o male dwarf rabbit (who is as cute as can be!!) and a month ago he was diagnosed with cical stasis. He ate Oxbow Critical care for two days and was on cisapride and oval for 5 days. Since then he’s had Papaya tablets to aid digestion every day (he LOVES them!).

        New symptoms:
        – his droppings have become slightly smaller, darker and seemingly harder… but still going often
        – making a lot more “baby” noises during sleep
        – more eye crust in corner of eyes (not enough to cause obvious alarm, but more than his usual)
        – grinding teeth loudly (not constantly, but periodically throughout the day…especially when sleeping/waking)
        – eating normally (thankfully!)

Over the phone the vet said to start cisapride again and to give him Critical Care if he stops eating. His tummy felt slightly bloated this afternoon so I also gave him 1/2cc of oval.

I’m wondering if anyone can give me ANY advice on helping him feel more comfortable/if there’s another reason for the grinding. I’m interpreting it as pain but the vet says it’s probably cical stasis coming back. I’d like to take him in, but the vet doesn’t feel it is urgent enough. I am a university student so my sleep schedule is all over the place and he seems to stay up/sleep whenever I do. He’s a free range rabbit but I’m certain he hasn’t eaten anything he wasn’t supposed to. I did spray “Bitter Yuck, No Chew Spray” for the first time a few days ago on a table near where his bed is.

I would greatly appreciate any advice as I am beyond worried sick!!

Hi Somebunny… The grinding could be tooth purr if he is doing when asleep, but yes it could also be discomfort…
          A few questions….
Does his belly feel soft or hard and distended
          What is his normal diet
What is his normal water intake
How much of the table did he manage to eat before being sprayed.

Did your vet check his teeth – particularly the molars for molar spurs?

Thanks for your response Roberta! His grinding is very different than what he sounds like when he purrs.
              – his belly feels like a water balloon but it’s not sticking out very far (I’m not really sure what it should feel like)
              – diet: tray of timothy hay all the time, oxbow pellets, papaya tablet x2 each day, and fresh greens every 2-3 days
              – I refill his water bowl twice a day, its about 1/2 cup
              – he didn’t actually eat any of the table, I just noticed him starting to bite it while trying to reach up to his food jar that sits on top

Hi Sarita, thanks for your response too. He was checked 3 weeks ago for spurs, but hasn’t been checked since. I won’t be able to get him an apt until after the weekend, is this to far away?

I think I would have the vet recheck him.

Did the vet do an x-ray of his stomach? I don’t know if after the weekend is too far – can you do a drop off? That is what I always do so the vet can fit my rabbit in between appts and do any diagnostics or x-rays as needed.

I can’t do a drop off because the office is closed over the weekend and they don’t keep animals there. Unfortunately it’s the only vet office willing to see rabbits within hours of where I live. They never did an X-ray but I’m going to call and hopefully get in first thing on Monday if they don’t have anything open tonight. Thanks for the advice!
