We have had Lola, our mini lop, for 4 1/2 months.  She LOVES willow balls and rings.  We have a willow tree, pesticide free, so I thought I could make my own toys, but I need some tips.

I experimented today with twisting several branches into a ring.  We have a wood stove in our kitchen, so I thought that would be a good place to hang them to dry, but for how long?

Secondly, how do you weave the branches into a ball shape?

I honestly have no idea! I’m not very crafty, so I’m more than happy to get the willow toys already made! I’m not sure if anyone here has made their own balls and stuff, but maybe just give the branches to chew on?

I’m sure there was a person who posted pictures of their own homemade willow toys in the last two months or so. Maybe do a forum search?

I finally got some willow toys in Australia after months of looking! Rufus is getting a willow candy cane for Christmas and some willow rings. So exciting

I made some willow toys for our buns, they loved them! I made a small basket and two rings, and they just destroyed them in no time. I gave the thicker branches that were left from the twigs to the bunnies as well, but they were not that interested in those. I actually did not dry the toys, as at least here in Finland the recommendations for rabbit care says that you can give natural willow to rabbits right after washing and brushing them clean, and that you should only avoid willow during the “flower” season, when the willow produces pollen(? not so sure how to say that in English). I did dry some other branches with leaves on them for winter, and I just left them in a dark, dry place to dry (meaning between newspapers in the sauna).

you may try looking up basking weaving and try soaking the willow before bending it into the ball.
