I am a new bunny owner, she is my daughter’s, but has quickly become all of our pet. She is a sweetheart and we have litter trained her. I am trying to find the best litter to control odor (she is a house bunny). Thanks in advance!

I use pine pellets. It does the best job of controlling odor and I can go a long time without having to change it. I cant believe I didn’t discover it sooner.

Some people say you shouldnt use pine because supposedly it causes respiratory problems but my buns tolerate it great.

I also use pined pellets – which is reasonably priced, and have also like using recycled paper litters. I buy the ones marketed for cats – because it’s basically the same thing – but much cheaper!

Thump, pine pellets are fine for bunnies. Pine shavings are what should be avoided.

I also use pine pellets. Mine are woodstove pellets, but basically the same thing, and usually cheaper than what you buy in the petstore.

I put a few layers of newspaper and in the corner she pees I put a little bit of yesterdays news and top that with handfuls of hay. I personally can’t smell any odor all I smell is hay.

I switched from newspaper pellets to pine pellets because I honestly could not handle the urine odor every time I changed the box. Pine is super absorbent too and I change the litter box every other day and with the paper it would break down quite a bit like wet paper does and there would be puddles of pee at the bottom, but not with the pine!

I really like Yesterday’s News and felt it did a great job, but it was a bit expensive. Wood stove pellets do just as good of a job and are very cheap, so I’ve used them exclusively for the past few years.

Where can you get wood stove pellets? And does it matter what type of wood it is?

I use regular pet bedding that I buy from petsmart. I change the box by dumping out the entire tray and putting in new stuff once a week. I only use a couple of handfuls so the jumbo bag lasts me about 3-4 months (it’s a small to mid size litter box). The bedding, I’m not exactly sure if it’s made of a paper type product or not, but it absorbs the urine before it reaches the bottom/plastic of the box. I don’t seem to notice any odors until the day I change it, the bedding itself is also odorless. I also only buy the white bedding so I can see how often he goes to the bathroom and it makes keeping an eye on that sort of stuff extremely easy.

Those of you using the wood stove pellets/pine pellets, do you fill the bottom of the box with them? I have been using a newspaper lined bottom followed by shredded newspaper and wood stove pellets sprinkled around (a few handfuls). With 1 bun and 2 boxes I have to change them completely every 3rd day. I was thinking of trying to just use the pellets but wondered if I would just go through it faster if I fill the box? I am using the paper just to make the pellets last longer for cost reasons. 1 big bag of pellets is lasting me 1.5 months for the 2 boxes. Just wondering how often you have to change your boxes and how you like using the pellets exclusively?
