I just noticed the other day that there are a lot of cecotropes around the litter box and the cage. I think I know which rabbit has been leaving them, but I am very concerned as to why. I usually find one every now and then but there are at least 10-15 today. He is still eating and doesn’t seem to be in any sort of distress (acting normal, etc.). I have not changed their diet, or fed them any more than usual (I understand overfeeding can lead to this).

Any ideas? Does he need a trip to the vet?

        Thanks

It’s really not a concern – some rabbits just don’t eat all their cecotropes – it’s more a case of that that overproducing.

Ok I’m glad it’s nothing bad. I was just wondering what would all the sudden cause him to stop eating them all. Within the last two weeks he went from eating all to leaving 20 a day at least for me… And even though he’s litter trained he’s often leaving them on the carpet…   Is there any way I can encourage him (through diet, or something) to start eating them all again?

            Thanks

Are you on a new batch of hay perhaps? Sometimes the new seasons hay is a bit rich. Or contains alfalfa from the previous years crop.

Do you see both rabbits still getting their cecatrophes in the usual manner?

I have a rabbit who would drop them about like territorial marking poop. He also seemed to have excess clusters of cecals but its stopped now.

Yeah, I wouldn’t panic here. One of mine drops them fairly regularly and they will increase or decrease without any change in diet that I can tell.

As long as they are both still eating them normally, they should be fine.
