Hello, my bunny stopped eating and drinking, i try to give her a lot of timothy hay, exercise and tummy rubs. shes seems energetic enough, even though it’s been 3 days since she had a proper meal, she ate a small portion of a carrot last night after running around for 5 hours.
i’ve replaced the pellets in her bowl with water, she did take a bit of a sip which is good i guess.

anyhow, i’m still very worried, as I understood this condition is called GI stasis, the vet’s around here (Lithuania) are not quite specialized in these types of critters, save for ferrets and skunk, it’s all about dogs and cats here.

so my question is, how can i help my bunny in her time of need without having the ability to go to a skilled vet? please help

I would go the vet and ask for sub-q fluids.

I would also have the vet check her teeth – perhaps this is the reason for the stasis.

In reality stasis is a condition and could be the result of an illness. Even though your vets may not be as knowledgeable about rabbits they can check teeth, do x-rays, check temperature and administer sub-q fluids.

I’ve only had one episode of stasis between my two and I syringe fed 100% pineapple juice until the issue cleared. Hope this helps.

I do not recommend pineapple juice.

Here is an article that you can take to your vet and discuss your rabbit’s situation with him/her:

                  hey i’m just reporting..

                  Well, my bunny just died…
I’ve tried everything that was available to me.

So… My advice to people in my situation is:

If you really love animals, and are considering to have a bunny as your friend, please, make sure theres a vet near you that is a bunny savvy before acquisition . Otherwise, if theres an emergency, you’ll cause pain to your bunny, and yourself. that is all.

                      I’m so sorry, Zeke.

It’s just terrible to lose a beloved pet.

I have rabbit-savvy vets in my town (in Sweden), but I didn’t think about that possible problem for one second when I found my first rabbit. It is important though, you are very right. Rabbits can be so delicate.

                      Binky free, little Zeke.

I’m sorry for your loss Zeeke.
Unfortunately gi stasis can be mysterious. It can take some quickly and others come through even after days if not eating.
I think your advice is good. I hope in the future there will be vets with a wider range of experience near you.

I’m sorry about your rabbit. I can tell by your concern that you took good care of her and did everything that you could. She had a good life with you.

I came across your thread last night when my rabbit suddenly stopped eating/drinking/pooping and I am awfully sorry that Zeeke didn’t make it. I know you tried to do everything you could to help her and she knows it too. <3

I took your advice and took my bun to the vet this morning to get her checked out while in the early stages of GI Stasis. Thank you for sharing Zeeke’s story, you have helped save my Emilee from the same fate.

I’m so very sorry. I experienced a bunny that died because there were no bunny vets available. It’s heartbreaking.
