I’ve been planning on switching to wood pellets, as buying a bag of carefresh every month is getting a bit expensive! I was wondering if regular hardwood fuel pellets like these would be safe to use:

It does say in the description that it can be used for pet bedding, but just wanted to make sure before i go ahead and buy it

That’s them! As long as they’re free of accelerants, that’s what you need.

Keep in mind that in some areas, they are seasonal, so you may need to purchase enough to last until next winter. If you can spend $30-40 and get litter for the whole year, it’s definitely worth it!

I use the wood pellets sprinkled over shredded newspaper. I have 1 6lb bun and 2 boxes. I have to change them every 3 days. I am only half way through the bag and have been using it for a month so I should get 2 months out of it. It cost me under 5.00 for the bag at Lowes. Should only cost me 27.00 – 30.00 a year for litter!

I agree with Beka..I use stove pellets, or the like, but oh, man, are they hard to find sometimes! When you find them, get as many as you can!!! It’s the same as the stuff you find at Petco, but $4 a 40/lb bag instead of $20. Stock up!!

Have you guys had any problems with it being uncomfortable for the bunnys feet?

My guys don’t seem to mind. One actually spends a lot of time just hanging out in his litter whether there is a lot of hay in there or not.

You may want to try mixing the pellets with the Carefresh at first and slowly transitioning to all wood pellets. An abrupt change could make your bunny less receptive to the new wood pellets. I did that for mine and he has had no problems.

I should say that at first I found the smell of all wood pellets to be a little overwhelming in its pine-i-ness so I mixed them with some paper pellets. But now I hardly notice the smell.
