My four and 1/2 month old Holland lop is a picky eater.  He won’t eat any hay except alfalfa…and I know I need to change him over soon.  I’ve tried them all from oxbow and he turns his nose up to everything..  do you have any tricks to help him along?

House Rabbit Sociery reccommends that you start the transition around 7 months:

“What quantities of food should I feed young adults? (7 months to 1 year)
introduce timothy hay, grass hay, oat hay, and other hays; decrease alfalfa
decrease pellets to 1/2 cup per 6 lbs. body weight
increase daily vegetables gradually; make sure your rabbit can tolerate
fruit daily ration no more than 1 oz. to 2 oz. per 6 lbs. body weight (because of calories)”

How much pellets is your bun currently getting? What type of pellets? When you start decreasing the pellets, bun will probably show a bigger interest in hay.

            Thanks for your reply.
He’s currently on alfalfa based oxbow pellets for young rabbits and i was feeding him freely. I just started to cut back on the pellets. He loves his alfalfa hay and goes crazy for it but not interested in much else. My vet said I should change him soon but I’m worried he won’t eat at all cuz he is quite stubborn.
(I just bought some meadow hay and no go)

Maybe if you lightly sprinkled a little bit of alfalfa hay over the timothy, orchard grass, and or meadow hay, it would entice your rabbit to eat the whole pile. Then hopefully at some point, you could discontinue the alfalfa hay, although some people give a very small quantity to their adult rabbits as a treat on an occasional basis.
