i recently switched my bunny’s pellets to oxbow essentials bbt and for a 5 lb bag it was $13.99 plus tax ,so a total of $15.81! In my opinion this is overpriced, what do you think? Anyone know any cheaper brands out there but just as good?

Ha! You’re lucky! In Australia I pay $24 for the same size bag of Oxbow (and Aussie dollars are the same as American dollars). Are you in the US? Your location will help people tell you if you’re paying too much.

I can buy a 10lb bag of Oxbow for $20, but I get it at a feed store (it actually used to be cheaper, $18). Petsmart charges more money. It’s like $15 for a 5lb bag, which I think it is bit expensive.

I buy oxbow in 10lb bags online for $16.99 a piece + free shipping since I just order the bun food with bird food and a few toys to get $50 total to qualify for free shipping.

A lot of things purchased online at tax-free. But yes, I pay sales tax when I buy their food at the feed store.

That’s a bit expensive I think. I pay about that much from the BinkyBunny store for 10 pounds of Oxbow pellets (not including shipping since I buy several things at a time). Pet stores are usually more expensive than my local feed store.

Marina, I live in Canada too, I buy my litter at ‘Pet Valu’.

I find that you really have to shop around, I right now am paying 15.00 without tax for a 1.8 Kg bag of food! (I think that’s around 4 pounds?)

However I buy my food at ‘Pet Pros’, the staff at pet pros is really nice, so even though they have pricier Items I buy there.

I think that your price is fine, it may seem expensive but for food of that quality, it seems perfect.

The price you listed for a 5lb bag is the same as in the pet stores here. $14.99 for a 4lb if you want the science diet type. Which is why I avoid buying from pet stores, generally. It’s so much cheaper to just buy pet stuff online. Though, finding good sites in Canada can be difficult.

And yeah we have to pay sales tax on retail items.  So the pet store prices get REALLY expensive once you add in gas to travel (about $10 to get to my pet store and back home), the price ($13.99 per 5lb bag) and tax (making it $14.85 per 5lb bag). That is U.S. dollars, if I convert it to Canadian Dollar, it’s $15.50 per 5lb bag after tax. So, if I were to buy from the pet store, I would actually be paying around $24.85 (25.94 Canadian) per 5lb bag if I just bought one bag per trip. Especially since my pet store is so far away, the only reason to go way out there is the pet store.

So, I buy online. $16.99 for 10lbs is way better than $24.85 for 5lbs and though it seems kinda expensive, it lasts over a month each bag for two rabbits (closer to two months) so comparing that to the $30 or so for a bag of good quality dog/cat food that lasts a week or two, I don’t feel so bad. I just bought my mom $42 in dog food and it won’t even last her two weeks with her Great Dane.

I don’t buy pellets (or anything really) at pet stores. Very overpriced. I would recommend that you explore online options. You can get more for the price, making it a better value. Recently, I ran out of pellets before my order arrived and had to go pay about $16 for the 5 lb bag at Petsmart. I was annoyed to say the least!

I definitely would not seek out a cheaper (and most likely, lower quality) brand. Just look at different options in terms of where/how you buy the good stuff.

Do you have a feed store or tractor supply by you? I get a 20lb bag of good quality pellets for under $9.00

If you can make a pellet that is as good as oxbow and cheaper, go for it. lol

I dislike mannapro and purina personally (for one, both are alfalfa based in stores here) so I choose to pay a little more for a food the buns like and is good quality and timmy based – I even sometimes buy them the 4lb blue bag of oxbow since they like the oat/orchard based pellet. They are worth it. It’s like my dogs, I prefer to feed eagle pack over purina or kibbles n bits because I like the quality more, even though it’s a lot more expensive.

You are lucky. It’s much more expensive in Sweden. A 5 lb bag of Oxbow essential adult costs 33 US dollar here, on line. It’s actually the same price in the pet stores. Perhaps it’s taxes.

But the European good quality brands are even pricier.

I would look online and see if you can get it cheaper.

I think I pay about $14 for a 5lb bag at the feed store, but my two eat so few pellets that one bag lasts for about 6 months.

I can buy a 10lb bag of Oxbow for 14.99 at my local rabbit resque. I consider myself lucky.
