Oscar’s Neuter

Oscar got neutered this morning, we just picked him up from the vet’s. They said he did great. He didn’t get any stitches, just glue. We got a cone for him just in case he ends up needing it, hopefully he won’t. So far he’s looking okay, he plopped right down when I put him in his cage, he’s been laying there since then (for about 30 minutes). He doesn’t want to eat yet, so we’re still waiting on that, as well as for him to use the litter box.

I’ll keep you guys updated on how he progresses.

My males did great and never seemed to care about/notice being neutered. Hopefully Oscar bounces back just as fast.

Thanks, MD! Your vibes worked, he started eating already! He finished off a romaine leaf and then started on some hay (which is weird, he’s not a big hay eater but for now he’s totally ignoring his beloved pellets).

Thanks everyone! He still won’t touch his pellets but he’s stuffing his face with lettuce and hay, so I’m not too worried. He hasn’t used his litter box yet, but I did find one small poop in the cage. I also got him to drink some water.
We haven’t gotten a look at his incision yet, we didn’t want to bother him when we brought him home so we’ll try to check it out tomorrow. So far he hasn’t shown any interest in the area.
He didn’t get any pain meds but he doesn’t seem to be in discomfort, he certainly feels well enough to eat.

Of course not…

Well, I try to spoil him, but he rejects everything I do. I made him a card board litter box that’s easier to get in and out of. He pretty much refuses to use it, he poops and pees all around it. This morning he managed to pee on the cage wall and then smear it all over his face. If he does pay attention to the box he just wants to tear it apart. When do you guys think it will be okay for him to use his normal litter box? It doesn’t have any low sides so I’m worried about him having to jump in and out.

Also, will it be okay for him to start using a ramp again tomorrow? He’s not happy being restricted to only half of his cage.

LBJ: You might well be right, although they didn’t mention a shot. Maybe they didn’t mention it because it’s routine.

We looked at his incision earlier, it looks good I think, the glue seems to be holding up fine. His bits are swollen and one of them is kind of divided in half, so it looks more like two small parts than one. I guess it’s just some odd swelling, we’ll see how it looks when it goes down a bit.

Hey Hazel, I know this post is a few days later (sorry), just letting you know when I bought Henry home (& of coarse each to there own) after the first 24 hours, I just opened everything up and let him decide what he was up to and not. I had no probs with Henry overdoing it, if anything I think he felt better that he could go back to following us around the house again. When he had enough, he went back to his house. Like I said, I think I am posting this too late, so I hope all worked out and he’s back to enjoying being spoilt again, lol….

We put his normal litter box back in yesterday, he uses it just fine. We also put his ramp back down so now he has access to the entire cage. He started climbing the hay rack to try to get out, once he even got his leg stuck doing that. That’s when we decided to just let him have the whole cage, he was getting too crazy.

I’m glad Henry was able to be out and about so soon! I’m worried about letting Oscar out because he turns into a crazy binky machine. The cat will want to play with him too, she’s already egging him on as it is.

I’m hoping I can keep him contained until Tuesday, which would be one week after the neuter. But that’s a looong time and he will probably start going crazy again before that.

I didn’t restrict the boys I’ve had in my care too much. They seemed to do really well. No trouble jumping into the box etc.
The ones that had incision on the abdomen recovered much quicker then ones that had incision on the sac.

Yes we checked him yesterday and the swelling was pretty much gone, they both look like empty skin flaps now. I’m so glad Hubby is here to help, Oscar is a nightmare to pick up, I literally can’t do it, but Hubby seems to have the magic touch. I couldn’t do it without him. The incisions look good too, nothing opened up and he doesn’t mess with it. I guess we didn’t have to get the cone after all. That’s almost too bad because they charged us $10 for it!! Although I have to say it is the most fancy cone I’ve ever seen, with foam around the edge for comfort and adjustable velcro for a custom fit.

Since his bits are looking so much better, we might let him out sooner. With the swelling gone I guess the danger of anything coming undone is not as great. He seems pretty content for now, but if (when) he starts getting antsy, we will probably just let him loose.

I sure would! Unfortunately it’s a plastic cone. Might still work, but I don’t think Hubby would be happy if I butchered it…

tanlover: Thank you! I’m glad there were no problems. We let him out today, he was thrilled! As was Lily, I had to keep her in check a little bit, she was very excited to see him out and about.
