Hi guys, we’re new bunny owners of a very lovely little mini rex. I read that rabbits shouldn’t have tap water due to chlorine; we have a filter on our tap but I bought bottled just to be safe. It’s spring water which is not distilled, should this be okay?

Also, while she is very well-trained and doesn’t poop anywhere besides her cage, I have noticed that if we put hay in her litter box, she tends to eat it and then poop somewhere else in her cage  She came with some of that fabric “fluff” in her litter box, but man that stuff is expensive!  I know that some cat litter is not safe for rabbits, but can anyone recommend a type that’s okay? She poos and pees a ton, so we’re going to be forking over some serious dough if we have to keep buying that fluffy stuff! Thanks!

I’ve never heard about rabbits not being able to have tap water. Mine drink it and seem fine but bottled water is probably best if you want to be reeeeally safe, although IMO it’s unnecessary.

Is she spayed? That could help with litter habits (although it hasn’t with mine!). And if you live in the UK I know all the big supermarkets sell cat litter that’s made of recycled newspaper for about £5 a bag. It’s basically a cheapo version of Yesterday’s News and does exactly the same job. If you don’t live in the UK I’d imagine big stores will still sell the same stuff, just make sure you stay away from the clumping litter.

Mine drink tap water and it’s perfectly fine. I think bottled spring water is going to get very expensive.

That’s great to know. I actually found big gallon jugs of the spring water at my grocery store for 88 cents, so it’s not that bad, but hey, if she can have tap water, that’s even better! She is spayed, and we live in the states. She was rescued from a hoarding situation and is only about 4-5 months old.

That’s not a bad price. I’d love to see pictures. I’ve helped rescue rabbits in a hoarding situation before – it was tough but dealing with a hoarder, not fun!
