        Hey guys,

I’m starting Pickles on veggies (as his previous owner did not), and I’ve gotten him started on Romaine lettuce and parsley so far.  I’m hoping to get at least 6 different varieties of vegetables in his diet

So I want to ask, what do you feed your rabbits on a daily basis? and how much do you give them of that specific vegetable?

One more thing.. I give Pickles both the darker leaves on the Romaine, but I also give him the lighter leaves as well (ie. the Romaine hearts).  Is that alright for him?

        Thanks

        New Bunny Mama

I give mine a variety of what I’ve been able to get at the store for the week. Most days he gets romaine, kale and cilantro. I also rotate in parsley, mint and basil. I give my guy (he is 3 lbs) about 3 cups of veggies a day. He eats a ton! So probably two huge leaves of romaine, two big kale leaves, and a handful of cilantro, parsley, mint or basil. I give mine all parts of the romaine except the very bottom of the heart where it tends to turn brown. I’m picky.

I also use whatever looks fresh at the store. Staples are romaine, kale and red or green leaf lettuce (4-5 leaves of these all together). Then I will add whatever looks good- basil, oregano, dill, mint, parsley, cilantro (usually 4-5 sprigs in total of one or more). Spinach, endive and arugula maybe 3-4 times/month. Beet/carrot greens when I get them. Small carrot 1-2/week and I also give one if the following daily: small piece of apple/banana/strawberry/melon/pepper or 1-2 blueberries. My buns are about 3-3.5 pounds.

Mine get around 4 types a day including: red leaf lettuce, green leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, escarole, endive, kale, parsley, cilantro, mustard greens, Swiss chard, dandelion greens, basil, wheatgrass, and spring greens. (high oxalic acid veg are fed sparingly)
They get treats of carrot or fruit twice a week.

I wouldn’t recommend parsley daily, since it’s high in oxalic.

Daily mine get romaine. What else they get varies by what I can find at the store. Parsley, herb mixes, cilantro, etc. My store isn’t very good about keeping stock, so I have to take what I can get. 3-4 types a week, usually.

My bun has 1 – 2 cups of veggies each day. Mostly the scraps from the salads and veg I cook for dinner (less the potato). I was told that herbs are super good (as mentioned above), so have just planted a herb garden consisting of coriander, parsley, mint, basil, oh and carrots as I know the carrot tops are great for bunny’s. The only thing I buy for Henry specifically is kale (which I just found out about). His treats are a bit of banana, apple and some leaves. I wish I could say he only gets his treats when he is being a good boy, but NA! that’s not gonna happen…. so he gets his fruit at the end of the night to get him into bed (yes, bribery! but it works!), lol. Some veg that hasn’t been mentioned, sweet potato and pumpkin. As a guide, it was suggested to me the coloured darker veg is all ok for bunny’s and I’m sure all good for Mr Pickles (lol). Good luck ‘New Bunny Mama’!

If you haven’t checked out the HRS article it’s highly recommended:
                    http://rabbit.org/suggested-vegetables-and-fruits-for-a-rabbit-diet/
It includes a list of bunny safe veggies.

I generally feed 3-5 types a day. My staples are Romaine, Green Leaf, Red Leaf, Kale, Cilantro/Coriander, Parsley, Bok Choy, Butter Lettuce, Swiss Chard, Basil, and different types of Mints.
