I feel bad, poor Zeusbunny had a bit of poopybutt going on.  I think I’ve got his diet rearranged so that it’s no longer happening (fingers crossed!), but now he has some dried poop very firmly attached to his fur right under his tail.  I’ve tried loosening it up with a warm wet washcloth but it just will not budge.

He’s got an appointment tomorrow morning for a sanitary shave at my vet.  The tech that answered the phone said they’ve done sanitary shaves on bunnies before.  I’m hoping it’ll just be a few quick swipes with the clippers and it’ll be done.

Anyone else had this done for their bunnies before?  Experiences would be great.  Poor Zeusbunny, I’m sure he’ll feel 100x better afterwards.

Yes, many times. It can be beneficial in help keeping them clean.

I do wonder if at his age he may be a bit arthritic or possibly have some molar spurs – both can be the cause of poopy butt.

I was thinking the same thing – he will be 6 in February, is that a common age for those things to start coming about?  Do they make joint supplements for bunnies?

Yes, I had a rabbit diagnosed with arthritis at 4 years old and of course dental problems can happen at any time with an aging rabbit.

Oxbow makes a joint supplement now – I’ve tried it – does it work? I cannot say for sure but it makes a good treat and is worth trying.

I’ll stop into the local pet store and see if they have those.  Luckily he is acting totally normal; I wouldn’t have even noticed if he hadn’t been laying funny the other day and I spotted it.

Hope your Zeus gets through the visit to the vet well. I just wanted to pass along that my 11 year old had that problem the last year or so of life, and it’s gross and messy but the quickest, gentlest cleaning method for me was simply sitting his bottom in a shallow bucket of warm water and I’d wear a glove or use a paper towel to rub the mess and it quickly broke apart and fell away from Sunshine’s skin. Yes, he didn’t like it, but grew accustomed to it (or got too old to fight) and it’s easier to do outside because they splash, but it cleaned up really fast and gently that way, so if it continues, I’d recommend that.  Hoping you don’t need this info after the vet visit!

Zeusbunny is on his way home, my mum took him to his appointment because I had to work.  The vet actually did the shave, which I was surprised at since I assumed it was just going to be the techs.  I’m glad it was the vet though, she does a wonderful job and it was the same vet who did his neuter and Hera’s spay.

I guess his skin was a little irritated underneath, poor guy.   They put a cooling lotion on it to soothe the skin, and he’s actually on an oral antibiotic for 10-14 days as a preventative measure.  No open wounds or sores, but considering the location it definitely makes sense.

The vet did say with the bigger bunnies, and also bunnies with medium/long hair like him, it’s a pretty common thing and he may need to get shaved periodically to keep clean.  Now that I know I’ll keep a closer eye on it.  I feel so bad his skin was irritated underneath, poor love.

He’s getting lots of pets and loving tonight!  Not lots of treats though, I’m going to be way more vigilant on his diet now.

Thanks for the advice!  I don’t know how well he’d tolerate a bottom bath, but if it comes up again I’ll give it a try.  He is surprisingly STRONG when he doesn’t want to do something!

Ha Ha Yeah, I might not want to wrestle w/ Zeus in water. Maybe you can help me w/ a question I was debating on posting.

I have a fuzzy lop that I just adopted from someone who couldn’t care for her any more. Gracie is 2 years old. She was a MESS from her rump on down and on the bottoms of her fuzzy feet. They shaved her as best they could, then sent me home w/ a soothing shampoo, as her skin was irritated on her back in one spot, plus she was still urine stained. She looked better after 2 or 3 baths, but continues to get soft droppings stuck to her. I don’t want to bathe her multiple times a week for the next umpteen years. Mostly her droppings look fine, but you know they get those soft ones.

I expected her to come home bald from the waist down so I could start over, but I guess the fur doesn’t shave off that easily. Did you find the shaving left a small amount of fur all around? Or is Zeus pretty bare skinned now?

Oh my…bummy baths are the worst! 0_0 I can get Pip and even Fiver to put up with a rinse in the sink, but Mimzy can’t balance so he flails the minute I pick him up. I daren’t let him ever get messy so I take him to the vet for a shave about every other month.
He’s also a little creaky in the back end and with his residual tilt it’s hard for him to get back there to keep clean. He moves so much better without all that extra fluff.

Many snuggles to the Zeuster! <3<3<3

I’d be happy to take Gracie to the vet periodically to be shaved, and I think they’d get a kick out of seeing her, but it’s not the total answer for her and I can’t stand how icky she gets almost every day. And then, even after a bath, she smells bad. Is that because she isn’t spayed?

Honestly I can’t even tall that Zeus is shaved, they did a good job just shaving his “undercarriage” so unless I were to flip him over I can’t see it.  My mum did say he’s pretty much bare skin where they shaved, though.  I’d suppose it would depend on the type of clipper blade used.  Most vets I know use the surgical blades, but if they were to use like a 20 or 30 blade instead it’d leave some “peach fuzz” behind.

Maybe it’s worth talking to your vet about, explain that you’re still needing to do butt baths multiple times a week?  I’ve never had an intact female so I can’t speak on the smell issue, sorry!

Zeus says thanks for the snuggles!  He’s been getting lots of love between my boyfriend and me (and my mum!).  I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on him, and if needed I’ve got no problem bringing him in for periodic shaves like you do with Mimzy.
