I am a first bunny owner, I have a 10 week old female Dwarf Lop named Gimli. Anyway, she was quite itchy ever since I have had her (only a couple of weeks) and so I purchased but have not used, this ‘Aristopet’ Small animal Mite and Mange spray. It says ‘Safely controls mange mites and lice on rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and mice.

I was wondering if anyone knows whether this is or products like this are really safe? is it actually effective? I have seen some bad things mentioned on a Google search (Some poor woman’s mice all died!) but nothing specifically for rabbits. Obviously I don’t want to harm her and I don’t care if it’s a waste of money, I will chuck the product out if it’s bad.

The ingredients on the bottle read like this:

        0.20g/L Pyrethrins

        0.36g/ L Piperonyl Butoxide

        0.60g/ L N-Octyllbicycloheptene Dicaboxamide

Pyrethrins is the first red flag… I would give it a miss and not even use it on cats…
The best product and most reliable is Revolution for Puppies and Kittens, its in the pack with the pink/lilac banner.
At 10 weeks I would avoid using too much of anything and try going to the vet to get treatment done.
After that you can measure out the doses by dripping it into the cap before spreading the fur behind her ears on her neck and putting it on.

Thanks for the info. Is revolution for fleas? or does it treat mites too?

Mites too, but be careful of the dose. Too much = could harm the bunny. Too little = could build a resistance in the fleas/mites.

Mites and sarcoptic mange in addition to fleas and some worms…. My Starsky was covered in chicken lice when I got him out of the pound, it cleared them in an hour… He was a much happier bunny too, they were so thick they were swarming around his eyes and when I tried to look at them they would race back into the longer fur so it looked like the fur around his eyes was changing colour from brown to black and back again. I also found the Revolution cat treatment kills maggots… My old 24 yr old cat was being harrassed by fly’s not long before she passed. I did every thing to keep her in and comfortable but she just wanted to sit in her favourite sun baking spot but the fly’s were relentless. One afternoon her face was covered in fly muck (they aren’t eggs, magots are born live and just looked like eggs) I thanked my stars I found them early and managed to wash her face before they started to move… Then I did some research and apparently the revolution may have killed them the minute the fly’s laid them… I am collecting more evidence and info and if it is the case this could be a way to prevent fly strike in bunnies.

Wow. I think we will definitely give that one a try That would be pretty awesome if it did prevent fly strike. I’d be interested to know how you go with your research. I was a bit worried about fly strike because the other day she had some solid poop stuck like glue to her bottom/dried into her fur. I ended up cleaning it off with a luke warm face washer, but will probably have to keep checking her.
