You know those lil compressed hay bails?
We have a hay feeder box that is the perfect size for one of those
Can I just plop it in there for my bunny to eat?
Or do I have to pull it apart first?

Idk if this is a straightfoward silly question or a sensible one.

I mean, I could totally see a bunny just nibbling hay from the compressed bail, But I also feel like maybe it would be too diffucult or something?

You can serve the compressed hay-cubes as they are. Rabbits have excellent teeth and good strength in their jaws. But hay-cubes are not a good substitution for grassy hay with long strands, it’s a complement. They need “ordinary” hay as well.

Oh, I see. When I’ve had that type of hay, I’ve torn off wads of it and fed my buns. Mine eat more hay if I refresh it often, so I didn’t give them the whole “bale” all at once. But if your bun isn’t like that, a bun is perfectly capable to tear a bale like that apart. (Bunnies are very good at tearing stuff apart, generally stuff you don’t want them to tear apart.)

You’ll soon see if he eats it. If he doesn’t, you could “ruffle” it up a bit where it comes out of the feeder.

                Ah thanks.
I thought that would be the case but wasn’t quite sure.
I think for now I’ll have to rip it up a lil bit because my bun is still a wee bby

I believe you must fluff it out.

I would tear parts off and fluff, simply b/c I bet Porky would scatter and waste a whole bail if I gave it all at once.

One of my bunnies would probably scatter a bale. The other one would probably ignore it.

It’s weird though that they want their hay refreshed several times a day rather than eat from like a pile of hay. It’s the same hay. But it seems to taste better freshly served.

Yeah, why is that?! My rabbits have a big plastic box full of hay that they sleep in and eat out of. When I first put it in there they were mad for it, but then they get bored until I flip the whole pile over so the bottom is at the top, then they go back to loving it…
