I am having serious doubts… I was unable to ask all my questions because the rabbit specialist was doing something in the back at the time of my visit. I just stopped by after work, so I didn’t really expect her to be available. However, the desk lady ran back and asked for some general info. She wrote down that they give fluids, pain management, and an antibiotic. Then she said something about no anesthesia when I asked if they would run blood work ect. I can’t remember if she said they don’t put him ALL THE way under, or if she said they don’t put him under at all. So, now I’m freaking out a little. I called back to find out what this meant and to ask exactly which pain meds and anti-biotic. I was also informed that she has never had a rabbit die in surgery or after surgery, but I’m just not satisfied. The vet is supposed to call back, but I’m not sure when.

The vet told me NOT to fast him, so that’s a good thing. She also said to send his food and water (another good sign). BUT I just can’t believe they could not put a rabbit to sleep to neuter him… how do they keep him still. SO, I’m sure I’m the crazy rabbit lady and I am waiting for a call. ERG I’m so stressed… Oh and the procedure is supposed to be on Wednesday. If I don’t hear back before then I’m rescheduling. ALSO, if he doesn’t seem to be recovering I may use a sick day on my rabbit… totally worth it in my opinion. I am also getting together all the stuff I needed to try to keep Korra alive after her spay. Benebac, syringe, and I will be asking to buy some critical care while I’m at the vet. I may get pedialite for my 1st aid kit as well.

All advice and thoughts are greatly appreciated… I’m a bit insane atm…

Hi Jessie. I think there must have been a miscommunication with regards to the anaesthesia. I know that rabbits are very sensitive to it, so my vet explained that they use “just enough” to keep them under, but no more than absolutely necessary to avoid complications. I definitely agree with double checking- but I can’t see how it would work otherwise.

As i think I mentioned in an earlier post, I took several days off work to be sure Shadow would be ok- especially after my bad experience with Butterscotch! Well worth it! I would not have been able to concentrate anyways!

I found water flavored with just a bit of orange juice Helped Shadow drink. I also gave her some critical care mixed with a bit of apple sauce in a syringe. I was so afraid of stasis.

Lastly, my vet gave me Metacam. It us the 24 hour anti-inflammatory. That first night, she seemed so uncomfortable. I posted here on BB, and Move Diagonally replied that she had given her bun an extra half dose if Metacam that night to help with the pain. I did that too, and 39 minutes later, she was moving around more easily and nibbling on hay. Perhaps you could ask if that us ok, and make sure you have 3-4 doses on hand.

Lastly, I would ask what time she needs to be there to get her ready, and I would drop her off then- no sooner. The Jess time she so ends in a stressful environment, not eating or drinking, the better.

Good luck and let us know how it goes! I will watch for updates!

I am a teacher, so I have very limited sick days. Also, I have to do some matting (art teacher) Thursday night after school, so I may not get any days off til the weekend. My BF does not work, so he will be home with him. He doesn’t know as much about rabbits, but he is going to call if there are issues.

Because I teach, Moogle will be dropped off right when I go to work and his surgery will be early that morning. However, I will be unable to take him home until after work… so I’m a little worried about that. That means he will be at the vet for 6 hours :S I feel a lot better after talking to the vet. It turns out the lady at the desk didn’t get it right.

He will be put under for a little bit over 15 minutes (the time it takes for the procedure). She says the rabbits are normally eating an hour after the neuter, so I am supposed to bring food and water for when he wakes. He will get Baytril and butorphonol. And SubQ fluids and adpropine or something like that. She says they use gas anesthesia. They are supposed to send them home immediately, but I won’t be able to get him til after school. I’m thinking about seeing if the BF would drive down to get him. Going to research all those drugs. I’ve heard about Batril but I don’t even know how to spell the other two lol

Okay, we are all set! Boyfriend is going to pick him up after his surgery and shove veggies and hay in his face until he eats I’m going to go over things to watch for tomorrow night and try to get all my grading done tomorrow evening before I head home. So nervous >< I'm going to see if I can get the critical care to send home and make sure they send home metacam with the bf. Moogle is bonded to Zach anyway, so I think this will be good for him.

Sounds like they gave you the right answers. My buns had to stay until late evening for their surgeries since the vet likes to make sure they come out of the anesthesia OK before they send them home. The vet techs kept an eye on them, kept them in their own carrier for comfort (with a towel from home and their own hay) and kept them in a private room to avoid stress of the dogs etc that were around. They both did fine having to stay and the receptionist called me the minute the surgery was over to let me know everything went OK. So, if you can’t pick him up til after work, he should be OK and you can always ask them to call you and let you know how he’s doing after the surgery is done.

By the way, for boys they often say they don’t need pain meds – ask to get some anyways. My boys recovery pain wise took much longer than my girl, though the boy was eating well before the girl.

Yeah, I will definitely ask for the pain meds. My boyfriend says he will pick him up when he’s ready, so I may just leave his number with them to call when he’s ready. We live an hour away, but I would feel much better if he’s at home with less stress. I guess I should just trust them, now that I finally got my answers. I’m going to go cuddle my Moogle bun now before I have to go to bed. Thanks for your support as always

Sounds like a plan! I am sure he will do well- most if these procedures do. Keep us updated!

Safe neuter Moogle! And vibes for you Jessie!

If it helps, Moogle’s twin Rufus did just fine with his neuter. He ate soon after and was acting like a crazy rabbit within 24 hours.
