I’m hoping someone out there can shed some light on some strange behaviour.  My 6-month(?) old mini rex was spayed today and I have brought her home.  I cleared out the cage and removed all sawdust and loose hay so nothing can stick to her wound, or poke her in the wound and lined the cage with newspaper and I put down a fleecy mat with a plastic back for her (and husbun) to sleep on.  I think Sweet Pea has pee’d as the newspaper where her bum was is now wet, fortunately she missed the fleece so at least she is still sitting on dry fleece (I don’t want to turf her out and re-line the cage with fresh newspaper as I don’t want to disturb her).  Anyway, my query is that she has now turned round and is frantically licking the wet newspaper!  I thought she might be thirsty and just too uncomfortable to move to the water bottle so I put a small water bowl right next to her.  She has drank quite a bit of the water, but she is now back to the licking newspaper thing.  I have refilled her water bowl just in case the water level was too low for her to drink without moving, but this wasn’t it.  Why is she licking urine soaked newspaper? She has never done this before?

Mabye she likes the taste of the soybean based ink? Anyway, I would remove the newspaper and replace it with fleece with towels underneath. The fleece will wick the urine to the towels below, keeping her dry. Besides that, I really have no idea why she would find peed-on newspaper appetizing.

I agree with LEL. I used a fleece on top of a towel for Shadow when she was spayed. I changed it whenever it got wet. I also replaced her regular litter box with one that has a low side – just a 1″ lip so she could easily get into it.

The bunny in your avatar looks south like my Shadow! She us also a mini Rex- just over 5 months old! Cute!

Thanks guys, as soon as Sweet Pea moves, I’ll replace the newspaper with a towel, I don’t want to disturb her as she’s probably quite uncomfortable.

Irina, my avatar is of Buckley who is my 16-month-old Netherlands Dwarf, Sweet Pea is his newly rescued wife who we adopted about 4 weeks ago. I really need to change my picture and my name, it’s just that when I got Buckley I joined this site for some much needed advice and instruction and I never thought I’d get another one as the battle to get the first ran for almost 5 years!

              Thanks for your “insights”
              x

Very cute nonetheless! I suppose it is hard to judge size from an avatar! Their coloring and facial profile are remarkably similar!

Hey buckies mum, i hope well for your bunnies recovery. I also have a netherlands dwarf that i love more than anything.hes estimated to be 2yrs old by the petshop i got him from about 4 months ago. Im single so at this point hes my bbf. I havent spay him,and im not sure if i should now. He’s potty trained to his food box only, and no other rabbits around. He gets a little humpy sometimes on my foot when im sleeping it wakes me up,and he stops.so many ppl say they need to be snipped to stop their peeing, and calm them down, but my buddy seems fine, and he’s very happy, and i dont know if its necessary to get him fixed or not.hes very clean down there,so i dont think he could get infections or anything. In your opinion, can rabbits still live a happy ,safe life without being spay?

Buddyboy-I know that you asked BuckleysMom, but I just want to add that I think it is necessary to spay rabbits (80% chance of ovarian cancer in unfixed females). Neutering is not as absolute, unfixed boys do not tend to have as many health problems as unfixed girls. Most people neuter their boys for behavioral problems. Sorry to but in.

Hi Buddy Boy, my little drawfie showed no signs of maturity at all, no humping, no growling, no spraying, he was absolutely wonderful, I did get him neutered at 11 months, but that was only because I decided he would benefit from a friend, otherwise I’m not sure I would have bothered, unless his behaviour changed. After neutering I did notice a change in his behaviour, he seemed more relaxed and would flop more than before but nothing else changed. His toilet habits were quite good before, he would poop anywhere in his cage but not on my carpet, so he would a,ways go back in for the loo just not in his litter box, but I can live with that. It’s not as important to neuter a male as it is a female so I guess it’s down to you and whether you accept his habits or are thinking of a companion then you would need to neuter. I do love my little Nethie to bits, he’s adorable!
