I recently bought my rabbits a new wooden hutch online and just got it in the mail yesterday.  When I opened the box I automatically smelled pine.  Come to find out the hutch has a stained pine finish.  Is this safe for my 2 rabbits?

        thanks,

        Robby

Pine shavings are not safe, but usually solid pine is. However, if it is stained, that may be bad depending on what it was stained with. Could you call the company?

Even pine boxes that are enclosed can cause issues from what I understand. The issue with untreated pine is the breathing in of the phenols that can contribute to respiratory issues. (though throughout the years this has become debatable and has been a bit more controversial) But there needs to be lots of air flow. I have a pine hidey box and cut several 2inch squares on the top and some on the sides, along with two large entrances – this helps with airflow.

This is also a hidey box, not their cage/house, so my bunny is not in it all the time. As far as the stain, are you able to find out what was used? For example, there is a site called rabbithouses.net. They use Mahagonay and say they use non-toxic finishes and glue. I am not sure what stains are non-toxic and you could call and get information about it. Then compare that info with the house you bought.
