Right now the buns live in an x-pen with a two-story hutch in it. The floor of the x-pen is cardboard, and the hutch has a plastic bottom. The top level has a towel/fleece. One of my buns, Bob, is starting to get sore hocks. He has a red bald spot on each back foot. How can we help it to not get worse? Should we change the flooring? We were thinking of getting those rubber type gym floor things that like link together… sorry if that makes no sense. Would that be appropriate? We cannot use carpet.

You could use those mats as long as your bunnies don’t chew them. I personally would use layers of fleece and towels with memory foam mats.

I use jute place mats for soft(er) spots on top of a piece of laminate flooring which the x-pen sits on. I’d love to use towels or something softer but I have a chronic pee-er and I was removing towels every single day with multiple pee stains so I couldn’t do that anymore. The jute placemats are safe to chew, my rabbits like to lay on them and when they get full of pee or poo stains, I just toss them in the tub with some hot water and vinegar for a good soak and let them dry in the sun.

Where can you get jute mats?

My bunnies chewed foam mats so I bought Snoozzie Mats. They are soft mats for dog kennels and come in different sizes, are affordable and can be washed and dried. They have done wonders for my buns’ hocks. I have a couple of different sized ones in their condos. If your bun is a big chewer, though, you have to be careful to watch with any type of material. You can buy them at pet stores and online.

I got mine at Marshalls. I stock piled when I found some, but then my Marshalls just continued carrying them intermittently so I always check because they’re only a couple dollars each. Home Goods or TJ Maxx might be good to check also since they’re all the same chain. Assuming you live in the US and have these stores around.

I’ll look around and see if I can find some. Thanks!

I also just found some on the Pier One imports website. Good luck!

I bought the gym flooring, and the buns love it! They binky all the time now that they don’t have to worry about slipping.

Awesome! So wish I could do gym flooring for my little cuties. When you have a pee-er it makes every option…not an option. haha
