3 days ago I got a lionhead bunny from a local rabbit breeder. I’ve only had one other bunny who passed away last year and I finally decided to get another one. This one is a buck. and just a few minutes ago I was sitting on my bed with him and he started to pee. but the pee shot out behind him, and it was a thick creamy pale yellow pee. This is also the first time he’s peed since I’ve had him. I’ve been giving him lots and lots of water. and I don’t know what this is, or if he’s sick. I just really want to know what I need to do.

He just marked you as his. Neutering should help with this behavioral issue. Was it a strong stench?

It is normal for pee to look murky. It’s the excess calcium they don’t need. They pass quite a lot of it through their urine.

Was it thick as was peering though, or the sediment left after the water soaked up that was thick?

@NewBunnyOwner123 It did have a strong stench, but thankfully didn’t linger after I cleaned it up.

@jerseygirl There was some stuff that laid on my sheet after most had been soaked up. It looked kind of sandish almost.

Moxi, that’s normal in bunny urine. How old is he? He probably sprayed. It’s common in unaltered, sexually mature male rabbits

                  Sounds normal to me.

If your rabbit is young, he’d be eating a diet higher in protein and calcium and eating lots. So you’ll probably see sediment in the pee.

Alright, I’m glad. It was just weird because my last rabbit didn’t ever pee like that.

                      And he’s about 18-19 weeks I think.

If it continues at inappropriate times… Like on you and your stuff I would start thinking about neutering him before it becomes habit instead of just instinctual.

Or, you could have just been holding him and he really had to go! But it definitely sounds like he marked. Harley started spraying right around 19-20 weeks of age. He got neutered a week after it started because it smelt bad and he did it anytime my husband tried interacting with him or when he was out of his cage.

I wasn’t holding him when he did it. He was running around on my bed. I would eventually like to save up and get him neutered but the vet here chargers nearly 400 dollars and I don’t have that much laying around.

I would definitely call multiple vets and get quotes. My vet was asking 479 for a neuter but I was able to find a place that would do him for $65. It was a little over an hour away but I think it still saved me money making the long drive

                              $479? That is crazy!
Wonder if fee set high to discourage owners because they prefer not to handle rabbits. That does happen. :\

                                My thoughts exactly, jerseygirl.

I have found that the vets that ask the most do so because they have the least experience with rabbits and none of the required medications or anesthetics on hand. The really cheap ones are also a concern. If you find one that charges about the same as an average cat then they are usually the ones with knowledge and experience. ALWAYS ask the questions first though.

Hi everyone, and just a quick Q Roberta, it’s Henry’s mum and I paid $220 to have Henry done in no no land, do you think I was charged a reasonable fee.  I was sent to a particular vet that deals in exotic pets….  and didn’t have the opportunity to shop around. I think $400+ would be enough to let him keep spraying us, ha ha ha… but $65, that does sound way tooo cheap. I hope my $220 was the norm – but my bill ended up being over $300 due to vaccinations too. (Sucker me, lol!).  Thanks.

Hi Andhenry, $220 is good for vax and speuter, its about the norm… I paid $225 recently for vax, neuter and micro chip for Pascal at vetwest. I am on Rescue rates at my other vet for the girls so it only cost $150 for vax spay and microchip, it would normally be about $300. There are cheaper ones about some are good some should be avoided at all costs… It contravenes Forum rules to name names but here in WA there is one that was considered the best that is now considered the worst.

Yes – I get that! That’s why I asked my trusted local dog vet, and as he explained it wasn’t the norm here, but was able to refer me to a vet who deals in naughty wabbit’s, lol…. I thought $220 was reasonable and he was really with it, especially when I bombarded him with all these silly questions cause my only source of info is the net. But it was great to hear you say what I was charged was pretty ok – hate being ripped off! Fantastic – thank you! Obviously, I didn’t/couldn’t get a chip, ha ha ha – and if I could I wouldn’t put my info down, all I would get is a dead wabbit and a huge fine! Silly hey!!!!! Thanks again Roberta.
