My parents started using frontline of our family dog. I’d told them how toxic it was to rabbits but it arrived in the mail today. Is it still safe for my bun to run around on my living room floor?? My dog does hangout there and occasionally rolls on the floor. My parents think I’d being paraniod but is there a real chance this might be dangerous?

Personally, I would wait until the oily residue the flea medication is gone before letting the bun out where the dog could have rolled around and rubbed it off onto things. Would also wash your hands well before you do anything with the bun after doing anything with the dog. I remember when we used to treat our dogs, we’d get that oily stuff on our hands just petting them if we forgot and brushed against their shoulder area. Frontline is highly toxic, so I would be worried about it as well.

Yes once it is dry/the residue is gone, then it is okay. Don’t let your rabbits come in contact with the Frontline.

So how many days do you think? Two or three?? I’ll wash my hands before handleing my bun.

48 hours I think, during which time the dog shouldn’t get all wet and children shouldn’t pet it.

If you take the dog for a one-hour walk directly after the application, the Frontline gets a better chance to spread on the skin like it should – if you apply it and the dog then directly lies down on a soft surface, most of the Frontline will get soaked into the soft surface. I know this from experience =/ That’s perhaps not a problem for your bunny if the dog has it’s own bed and the bunny never goes there, but it’s a waste of Frontline and the dog doesn’t get properly protected.

I nolonger use Frontline on my dog, I use Ex-spot, because that works better against ticks (dog-fleas are uncommon here) + it’s less poisonous to rabbits. You could perhaps suggest Ex-spot the next time your parents are ordering flea-medication.

I’m not sure if there’s going to be a next time. My dogs really sick right now we’ll be taking him to the vet tomorrow but we suspect congestive heart failure may be the culprit. I will though after this all kind of rolls over, which I hope it will.

Oh, I’m so sorry. Hope there’s sth the vet can do, like diuretics. Is she old? It’s just terrible when your dog gets sick =(

I worried about this a lot, and my dog has never been on Frontline or the other medications that are harmful to rabbits. Right now he’s on Vectra 3D, which works well and appears to be relatively safe.

I spoke to my rabbit vet and she thought the risk was minimal with something like Frontline, assuming the rabbits aren’t grooming the dog or anything. Just wash your hands a lot for the first day or two after application, and maybe don’t let the dog in common spaces.

Sorry to hear your dog is sick and I hope she pulls through.

He went into the vet yesterday and they dont think its his heart. He seems to have fluid in his lungs which is why he’s having such a hard time breathing. He’s a 13 year old poodle yorkie scottie mix.
No the bunnie isnt grooming him lol, they dont get along that well. If cappy gets too close my dog will let out a little growl and the bunny backs off. They have a weird relationship but my dog isnt agressive with him.
They prescribed some antibiotics and he seems to be feeling a little better. While I still suspect that he is in the early stages of congestive heart failure there isnt much I can do. I did suggest they ask for a blood test next time he goes in if the antibiotics dont work. A blood test will tell for sure if its CHF but maybe there right maybe its just an infection of some sort. Only time will tell.

Sorry your dog is sick hopefully the treatment will work.

For how long, however long they recommend you don’t bathe the dog is usually enough. Just check the spot (usually between the shoulder blades) for residue after that to be sure. If you can rub the spot and not get any on your hand, it isn’t likely to rub off on the carpet etc either.
