So I have a two-month old holland lop who only likes to go to the bathroom in a shoebox lid with no hay or litter/bedding on top of it.  Needless to say, its quite messy and I have to clean it out daily.  I’m looking for any advice on what kind of container that I should use for her to make cleaning a little easier.  When I had a taller box in there, she didn’t take too well to it, so something shallow would be perfect, but I’ve yet to come up with any good ideas.  Thanks.

You could always cut an opening in a taller box so she doesn’t have to jump to get in it. Many people like having the high walled litter boxes because bunnies have a tendency to pee over the side sometimes. Have you tried different kinds of litter? Some bunnies are just picky about what kind of litter they like. Paper or wood pellets are popular choices around here.

My thought would be to put the shoebox lid inside a normal litter box (maybe put litter in the box and put the shoebox lid on top of it) for a little while, let her get used to the new set up (and the idea of litter) while still using “her box” and then slowly try to transition her to just the litter box.

Check out some discount or dollar stores… You might be able to find a large but shallow storage or tupperware type container, or even a cheap 13×9 inch cake pan?

Maybe a small jelly roll pan lined with news paper. They have very shallow sides and are washable.

ETA: Just don’t get a nonstick one.

I get these wood things from the pet store, its kitty litter but it says its fine for rabbits too, so far my rabbit’s seem to like it and it cleans easy since the stuff kind of pulverises when it gets wet but wont stick to surfaces.

and I just bought one of these special rabbit litter boxes, its a corner thing that hooks into the cage, really nice

I know what it’s like to have a bunny who is very specific about where they pee! I go my bun a couple of very shallow tupperware containers from a dollar shop like Beka suggests. He does very occassionally go over the side so i normally sprinkle a bit of litter over the side of the container to absorb it just in case. I also keep the litter very shallow in the box, just enough to cover the bottom and this helps to stop him going over the edge. My bun likes it so much that if he’s not near that box in the corner of his cage, he refuses to pee whatsoever!

Thanks for all the advice, everyone! I went ahead and got her a small container to switch out with the shoebox lid because it was getting a little nasty, but she hated that and started going in another corner of her box. I gave her back the lid but she is still going in that other spot. I definitely want to cut down the container I have, but I’m not sure the bedding/litter that I have (Carefresh Ultra) will be good in there. She also loves to just lay in her little shoebox, but not pee in there anymore. I’m kind of at a loss still.

Since we bought Henry home about 6 months ago, we used a standard old fashion cat litter tray (we never owned a cat, so why we had one??? Lol.)that you can still buy from Big W / K mart and because we weren’t experienced with bunnies, we just went with instinct – put newspaper in the bottom topped with shredded paper. It worked. Even when we decided to build him a new house to sleep in and he decided to use a different part of his home as his ensuite, we just moved the tray to the other end and all good. This is at no cost to us, as the newspaper is free, and we shred everything that comes in the post for security. We have never had to pay for litter products.
And good luck to anyone trying identity theft – shredded rabbit pee’d info from our bin, ha ha ha…..
