Hello again! I feel like such an idiot. Bunnicula has been showing interest in my sister’s food but not mine, so when I had to run to the kitchen to put his veggies in the fridge, I left a bag of glazed donuts on my bed without thinking. When I came back only a couple of minutes later, I found my precious troublemaker with his head in the bag, licking the side of the plastic. I don’t think he licked off much, since the bag was still messy with glaze and didn’t look chewed or anything, but I don’t know how much he got inside him. Should I be worried? Or rather, since I am worried, should I be panicking? So far he seems normal, if a bit overly energetic. But he was energetic even before this.

Thank you for any help or advice. I appreciate it.

I’m not sure what’s in donut-glaze, but if it’s mostly sugar, I don’t think you need to worry. Just keep an eye on the workings of his stomach, check that he poops in good order. Give him hay. And no fruit etc if you feed fruit normally, he’s had enough sugar today =) Chocolate isn’t poisonous to rabbits like it is to dogs (if there’s chocolate in the glaze I mean.)

Oh no, no chocolate – honestly, I probably would have taken him to the vet if there had been (mostly because I’m used to having dogs, so I assumed bunnies would get sick too). I’m not sure what’s in the glaze, but I always just assumed it was probably sugar and water. He’s definitely not getting any sweet treats today though.  So far he seems okay. Very active. I haven’t noticed him pooping yet, but I’m about to clean his cage, so after that it should be very easy to tell when he’s done his business. Lol. Thank you for all the advice! I’m going to give him lots of hay, and never, ever leave any kind of food within his reach again. Haha.

Donut glaze is pretty much butter and sugar – so he should be fine. Just watch him for any negative side effects of the increased sugar levels, since really that is a lot of sugar for a buns body!

He seems fine so far, thank goodness. I am starting to think he’s feeling the sugar, though, because he won’t sleep! Haha. Usually he’s napping by now, but not today. Today he’s very alert. But he’s eating fine and his poops are normal, so if excess energy is the only side effect, I’ll be a very happy mommy.

Thank you to both of you for easing my mind!

I think bunnies are capable of getting a bit of a sugar high the same way people are. Once my niece upended a bag of Craisins on the floor and Rufus went to town before I could get them all picked up. He spent the rest of the day having really intense periods of zoomies. He had so much energy and then he crashed a bit. Just like a little kid at a birthday party!

Haha indeed they can. My boyfriend sometimes goes overboard on the craisin treats and when he does, the buns go crazy with the zoomies and then crash out sleeping earlier than normal for night time. The main issue with excess sugar as a one off is sometimes it can give them an upset tummy, just like with a kid, but if he’s eating and acting normal you’ll probably just have a tired bun tomorrow since he missed his naps.
