Tucker is 1/2 Holland lop & 1/2 English lop. He is 3 months old and I got him one month ago. The first week he was home he ate timothy hay like crazy along with pellets but then just stopped eating any hay! I tried some oat hay and orchard grass but he just has no interest in any of it. The only way I can get him to eat any is to mush up some banana or apple sauce with it. He seems completely healthy, is active but sweet & affectionate, growing and poops plenty! What should I do? I read that they MUST have hay but then have been told by a few bunny owners that theirs live on pellets alone. I want to do what is best for him. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Since his a baby, you could give him alfalfa (lucerne) hay. It’s often appreciated and it’s good for growing rabbits (adult rabbits can get fat from it). They need hay for their teeth and stomachs.

Its possible he is filling up on pellets and doesn’t want hay due to that. You could try hay toppers to get him interested. I put craisins in my buns hay sometimes. Alfalfa is ok too while he is young. The cut of hay also matters, since it has different textures. Buns should have hay for their teeth (the grinding motion helps wear down the teeth) and gut to keep the digestive system moving. They can’t free feed on pellets as adults as well and they are grazers by nature. It would be like having a horse and only letting them eat pellets.

Some buns can be a bit picky. Stickers is a pain with hay at times. She won’t eat timmy or oat, she likes brome or orchard… but only the good orchard, if it isn’t green with long strands and really soft she doesn’t like it, so poorer quality stuff is not to her tastes. Powder on the other hand eats any and all hay. So keep working with him.
