I have about 10-15 pounds of alfalfa seeds I bought last year at a very good deal($3 a pound!) I sprout alfalfa for us and our chickens. I asked my daughter(12) to give her bun cinnamon some alfalfa and she just about had a heart attack that I asked. I never brought it up again.

I am curious though, is it safe to feed the buns freshly sprouted alfalfa?

The chickens and us really love it! I was lucky to get such a great deal and it’s organic. 2 tbsp of seeds sprouted about 2 quart sized plastic bags jammed packed full. I Also sprout other grains for the chickens like oats, peas, corn, ect…

        Thanks, Nicole

Oh, I also have about 600 or more romain lettuce seeds that I can plant. I was going to grow it for myself to juice, but I can’t stand it. Can I grow it for the bunnies to eat? I grow my own spinach too, it’s much cheaper to grow then to buy at the store.

Bunnies love alfalfa but only baby bunnies, up to about 7 months or so, need it. Romaine is awesome for bunnies, but if you are introducing a new food, do it slowly, in small amounts and watch for any diarrhea. Bunnies should get greens every day along with pellets and hay.

Alfalfa sprouts are alright but they are high in alkaloids and should not be fed with any other high alkaloid greens. Romaine is great for bunnies, as Cheri said, but Spinach is high in oxalic acid and shouldn’t be fed with like foods either (No spinach and sprouts on the same day).

There are some great articles about veggies and what can be fed together, etc that would be worth checking out:

Thank you very much! Since winter is coming greens are harder to come by. They will grow great in our basement and this year I’m making a small greenhouse for my herbs, greens and peppers. I just bought some nice 3 gallon pots cheap on amazon. Right now I’m mostly feeding greens from outside and spinach.
