Has anyone tried Sherwood forest rabbit pellets? They claim they should be eaten alone, no hay…. the ingredients look good, but I was wondering if anyone had some reviews? The hay bit sounds weird to me.

I think some people here have fed Sherwood successfully but I believe they still fed limited pellets, veggies, and hay. Feeding hay is not only about nutrition. Rabbits need the long strands to aid digestion and help grind town their back teeth. No matter how healthy a pellet is feeding ONLY pellets has notoriously led to dental issues.

There are two kinds of Sherwood Pellets for adult rabbits:

          1. Fortifying Essentials Rabbit Food (This one suggests you still feed hay, ect)
          2. Maintenance Rabbit Food (This is the one that suggests no hay, ect)

Here are the comparisons to it and what’s recommended and Oxbow which is usually considered “the standard”:
           photo SherwoodComparison_zps78fd4760.jpg

The Sherwood Fortifying Essentials has 5.56% more protein and 5% more fat than the max recommended. The calcium content is also higher but unless a rabbit has bladder sludge issues/predisposition higher calcium isn’t too much to worry about (though this is debated often). I’m not very impressed by this one.

The Sherwood Maintenance is a little closer to the recommended diet. The protein, fiber, and calcium look alright but the fat is still 3.33% over what is recommended. This one is a bit more promising to me.

Where Sherwood shines is in the ingredients department. They are one of the only companies that do not include wheat or soy in their pellets. For rabbits allergic to those ingredients Sherwood is one, if not the only, option for them. Another thing to consider is that pellets are really a small part of an adult bunny’s overall diet. So the higher fat in Maintenance might not be a big deal for bunnies on very limited pellet diets. Of course limited pellet diets still include hay and veggies.

Anyway, that’s my take on Sherwood!

. I have heard of them only because the owners have approached us again very recently in regards to selling their product but I haven’t had time to yet to do the necessary research. The timing of this question about this company in our forum is a bit ironic!
Hay is the most essential part of a rabbits diet so Im not sure what the deal is with that recommendation. Since companies and company reps are not allowed to post in the forum because  their posts, even just “clarifications” naturally lend themselves to product  promotion (aka: forum spam), then you should double check and clarify the “no hay” info with them directly to make sure it is not a  misunderstanding.

I use the Maintenance one, but I do not free feed. My two get unlimited hay, a big bowl of veggies and small amount of pellets every day.
              The pellets smell really good.

I agree with double checking on info when it comes to stuff like this. In this case Sherwood confirms their no hay instructions and explains their reasoning behind them here (if anyone’s interested):

But I think everyone I’ve come across that feeds Sherwood treats them like any other pellet. Limited quantities with hay and veggies (Like Prada).

I got a sample of the formula for baby rabbits. It was a free sample of 2lbs I just had to pay the shipping. Kilala didn’t really care for it that much. I mixed it with what the breeder gave me. While she did eat it it would sit in her bowl till later in the day. I also noticed what some others posted in reviews somewhere that I read that her fur was getting kind of dry and brittle. I quit feeding it to her and that cleared up. I am not sure about the adult formula. I feed my adult rabbit organic food from Oxbow. the adult food of that company had alfalfa as an ingredient and I didn’t want to feed him that. Also seen the formula where they say you don’t have to give them hay. Rabbits need to eat hay for their teeth. If you want to try their food I would get their samples. I believe you can get samples of all the food you just pay the shipping. I thought 2 pounds was a great sample size.

I can’t really speak to the brand of pellets as I’ve never used them. We’ve always used Oxbow and been very happy with the quality, not to mention their customer service is superb. I definitely do not agree with the “no hay necessary” thing.

I have been feeding my rabbit the Sherwood Forest adult rabbit food for about a year and a half. Took him a while to start eating it. I offered it to him with Oxbow pellets and he slowly started eating the Sherwood. It is so fresh and green compared to Oxbow. The date it is made is stamped on the package. Can’t say enough good things about Sherwood pellets. My bunny’s fur used to be coarse and brittle but since he has been on the Sherwood diet, it is soft and silky. I fully recommend it. I do put hay in his litter box and also give him a treat of fresh veggies once a day.
