I think I have a weevil infestation in my rabbit’s pellets because I see little blackish-dark red beetles crawling around it. It’s pretty gross- bugs crawling in the food your rabbit eats,

well anyways, as soon an I saw it I freaked out , dropped the pellets in my hand that I was going to give to my rabbit and ran to the internet to see they were harmless or not and again, I freaked out because people kept saying that they were poisonous, and that I should throw it away , but I can’t because my mum says:

         1. it’s extremely expensive

        2. there’s not a lot of them

3.I should stop worrying too much

4.that she will put the pellets on newspaper in the sun to get rid of it (which I think isn’t a great idea)

        help me

PS I didn’t know which category this suits in

I would toss them. I wouldn’t want to eat anything with bugs in it… ick!

Well here’s some info that might encourage your Mum to dispose of the contaminated pellets…
WEEVILS SPREAD ! If they are in the pellets and the pellets have been in or near the house it won’t be long till they are also through all of your dried food stuffs like flour, rice, lentils, beans, cereals etc etc etc…..
I don’t believe they are poisonous but they do comprimise the quality of food and cause it to spoil faster and who wants to eat something a swarm of weevils has probably pooped and peed in not to mention breeding etc…
Seriously unless you want everything weevil infested throw them away OUTSIDE THE HOUSE other wise they will migrate from the bin straight into the other food in the pantry. Thoroughly clean the area around where the pellets were stored and next batch stick them in the freezer for a few hours (sealed in plastic) to kill any eggs that may be already in there. Do the same for any rice, flour, pasta that you bring in to the house.

Oh, and if you have been keeping the pellets outside… A.. Thats probably where they came from and B.. You have probably carried eggs or larvea back into the house on your hands, hair or clothes so they will be getting ready to Partay in the Pantray!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzzZS7r9fPs

I strongly suggest you tell your Mother (in whatever way you think she will take it best), that being cautious is wise. A trip to the vet’s is going to cost a great deal more then a new bag of pellets. Furthermore if you bought them at a local pet store I’d bring them back. The store or online site who sold them should be informed of the problem, (if you bought them online write to the site and offer to send a photo) and you are likely to get a new bag for less than full price, which may help your Mother agree. Feeding your pets bugs is irresponsible, and not telling the person from whom they were bought is also irresponsible.

Sorry you are stuck in such an unpleasant situation. Since I’m ever so slightly fobic about bugs (massive under statement) if that had been me who found my rabbits’ food stroling around in my hand I’d still be shreeking and carrying on. I also would be splashing quantities of disinfectant around (over kill but insects effect me that way), and there wouldn’t be a scrap of food from that bag in the house. But being in charge of your own budget is a definite plus. Best of Luck!

Good point GD, if you can get the supplier to give you a refund or replacement your mother can’t object..

I am not sure, but does anyone know if there is a connection between weevil contamination and some cases of Salmonella ??
