Hi everyone I have two really good hay racks above both my litter trays but my bunnies dig all the hay out of them and it gets mixed in with the litter, does anyone have any ideas of how to stop this?

I usually put my hay rack next to the litter box, rather than above it once my bunny is completely litter trained. (Of course, move it back if they start to poop or pee below the new hay rack spot outside the litter box.) When it’s close by, they usually just stop eating and jump into the litter to go.

Sammy pulls all her hay out of the hay rack, spreads it around eating all the tasty bits, then pretends she is out of hay and begs for a new, fresh refill. She did that this morning, so I scooped up the scattered hay, put it back in and tossed it there so it would “freshen up”. It didn’t fool her – I got the stink eye – but she has plenty to eat now until her next batch of fresh hay before I toss the old stuff. Many bunnies will settle for day old hay that is fluffed and turned over to the top. If you let them, they’d have you throw it out daily.
