My bun got neutered 2 weeks ago. The surgery went fine, and even though he pulled his stitches out, the wounds scabbed over and are healing well.

The thing is I’ve noticed a massive change in his drinking habits now. He used to finish a bottle in a day, and now he drinks barely anything.

I’ve tried replacing the bottle, moving it around the cage, adding a bit of juice to the water, and using a dish instead of a bottle, but no luck. Now I’m just not drying his veg after I wash it, in the hopes that he’ll get what he needs from that.

Should I be more worried about the lack of drinking? And is it the neuter that’s changed his habits?

I doubt that it’s related to the neuter, but not drinking, or not drinking enough, is serious. I would call the vet and ask if you need to bring him in. Keeping his greens very wet is getting him some hydration, so that helps. If you want to mark a line on the water bottle when you fill it, then check it in the morning when you aren’t around to see him drink from it, that may help you determine how much or how little he is drinking. I use a crock dish, and Sammy almost never finishes it, but I can see progress daily. I put out a spare dish because her favorite one is too shallow and I want her to be able to have more if she needs it.

Call your vet and discuss. Hay and water are the two most vital elements in their daily diet.

Ahh! I was worrying over nothing I think. He was hopping about this morning when I put down his food and clean water bowl, and he stuck his face in for a drink. Seems that he prefers the bowl now, and it’s harder to tell how much he’s drunk (especially when he throws his ball in the bowl too :p)

            Thanks Pam
