Lettuce every night. Matter of fact, she dictates when it’s time for her “Lettuce.” Just found ot she loves, curly leaf parsley, and it is waaaay cheaper than Romaine, but, is it nutritionally acceptable instead of lettuce? Was always told feed “romaine” lettuce, not iceburg, but is Parsley a good sub?????????????????

It’s fine but you really should feed a variety each day.

Parsley can’t be an always green, it must be a sometimes green. Variety is important. We get different things depending on what looks freshest, or what’s on sale. We often buy premixed ready to serve salads, b/c we are lazy. In addition to a fair amount of romaine and some parsley, Porky gets cabbage, dandelion greens and heads, rose petals, basil, mint, cilantro, carrots, brussel sprouts, broccoli, apple slices, kale etc, etc.

The reason so many feeding instructions stress romaine lettuce isn’t b/c romaine is necessary daily. It is b/c iceburg lettuce is bunny junk food.

Iceburg has no nutritional value that is why they stress romaine (or other DARK LEAF lettuces). Iceburg is mostly water, with little to no nutrients and will fill them up without giving them anything and can also cause diarrhea. You really want to feed at least three types of greens per day if you can. My staples for them are : Romaine lettuce, kale and parsley (varied what of that they get per day, but those are the three easiest/cheapest to get to base a salad on) and I add whatever else I can get my hands on. Usually I can get cilantro, sometimes I will get spinach, occasionally add broccoli, during summer/spring they get fresh dandelion, when the mixes look good they will get an organic herb mix they have in the store. My choices are very limited since I have no real market around here and the stores have small produce sections. But, I try to get them a varied 3 green+some fruit or special thing each week.

One thing to keep in mind when you offer new greens (or veggies or any other food) is that you should do so slowly. Variety is important but too much variety all at once could upset her tummy. Try a new green every week or so and only give her a little the first night, and slowly increase. Eventually you will know which ones she likes and which ones she ignores. (My guy hates mint, for example.) You will also know if any cause tummy issues. Then you’ll be able to grab what ever looks good or is on sale at the grocery store and give her some variety every night.

Here’s an article that explains what types of greens and veggies are safe for rabbits…

My vet cautions against too much parsley. It’s ok to include, but shouldn’t be the bulk of their diet.

My buns do eat lettuce (romaine, green leaf, and red leaf) as the bulk of their diet because one of mine is picky, but other greens are also great. Look at the diet page here on Binky Bunny for some more ideas. I do find romaine to be one of the cheapest out there though for how much you get in one head.

It’s not bad here. But, they get it from a local farm instead of some brand name. Same with the local store.

And Elroh, your vet probably cautions it because parsley is high in oxalic acid. Even humans shouldn’t eat too much of it.

My wife works at Wal-mart overnights, and has brought home the limpest ditryest Romain Lettuce I’ve EVER seen, she almost won’t even buy it for a bunny, let alone human consumption! It is pretty dang bad and a large head $ bout $3.00

We will usually buy the 3-pack bags of romaine hearts and that works well for us. They’re between $2-3 each depending where we go (Walmart, Target, Giant Eagle, Aldis, etc…) When we had two bunnies, we would get the big 6-pack of romaine hearts at Sam’s Club, but with just Meadow, a 3-pack is enough (along with her other veggies).

                            Yep, that’s exactly why.

                                Have you read this article?:
                                http://rabbit.org/suggested-vegetables-and-fruits-for-a-rabbit-diet/

It has a lot of good information about feeding veggies and has a list of different greens and how much/often they should be fed.

EDIT: I totally missed that Dobby gave the link above! D’oh!

Hm, expensive. Has she tried red leaf? Its usually better than their romaine. Or, they carry the plastic bins of organic salad mix at all the stores here. Usually if I get vegs from walmart I either go really early around delivery day or grab the plastic prewashed prepped organic salads.

Do you have a dollar store around you that has groceries? That is where I get stuff for my buns… cheap, and depending on the week you can sometimes even get those fancy organic salad mixes in a huge box for a dollar or two. I can usually feed a bun on 7-8 dollars a week on a pretty good variety from there.
