My hubby saw a hampster ball made for a bunny and he wanted to know if it was really a good idea for rabbits. Is it a good idea or something to just leave alone?

No, I’d leave it alone. Those are designed for hampsters, and if I remember right, they have holes in them. Rabbits run on the ground, and are vulnerable to getting toes and toenails caught in any small hole. They would probably take it in their teeth and toss it, anyway.

I can't seem to find any toys for him. I have been going to different stores and pet stores too. Any suggestions?

My buns LOVE paper towel tubes. And phonebooks to tear to shreds. A few of mine love to throw wiffle balls around and we have some untreated wooden play toys we found at the pet stores to buy them. When they were still in their condo, my one bunny LOVED the play Kabob we got him from the pet store also. It hung from the ceiling with wooden pieces and he always yanked on the bell, pretty much ALL day long.

I seem to find that my rabbits really enjoy the home-made gifts. A cardboard box can make a neat little hidey house they can chew on as well as jump on top of. Mine also like when I cut small holes in the paper towel roll and stuff in some hay along with a few treats. They go nuts throwing it around and yanking the hay out. If you look through some older threads, just google “BinkyBunny Rabbit Toys” and you’ll see a BUNCH of threads on home-made toys!

I would think a rabbit would have difficulty moving inside a ball anyway. I mean, the mechanics aren’t there. Rabbits don’t run on wheels, so I don’t see them enjoying a ball. And like Pam said, they could hurt themselves.

Mine are currently obsessed with some hard plastic baby keys. They like phone books and willow/grass balls. Anything they can shred or toss really.

I bought one for Boo Boo when he was a baby – to introduce him to Baxter, our existing and aggressive bun. He never figured out how to run in the ball – but at least they could see other – without Boo getting attacked. But it wasn’t really fun for him – so I’d pass if you’re trying to get him something he’ll enjoy.

My boys LOVE shoe boxes! And all forms of willow branch chew toys.

And wouldn’t the poor buns spine be curved in a horrible way? And what about if there were any accidents with poop or pee? Or it getting hot in there?

bunnygirl – That’s what I meant by the mechanics not being there. Even in a large ball, the poor buns butt would be hiked way up making it difficult to move in their hopping gait.

I don’t suggest buying the ball. To keep your rabbit engaged, you can try to teach him to do tricks. Also most of my bun’s toys are ones made for cats and dogs.

Definitely no running ball-their spines are too long and not flexible or strong enough for that -you could have a terrible traumatic injury from that.

Check out the toy section in the forums-many rabbit toys can be found around your house-toilet paper rolls, shredded paper, towels, phone books…the list goes on

Paper rolls, phone books, anything willow (bark on), wood to chew, dig boxes. Anything that can be destroyed, basically. My buns also enjoy their cat condo.
