Does anyone know where to get cheap timothy hay (or other local grassy hay type) in Sydney, Australia? They are about $18 (425g bag) from my local vet. Can anyone recommend an alternative?

Pet shops aound here only stock straw (not nutricious enough) and lucrene hay (legumes, too high in protein).

Timothy hay is almost non-existant in Australia. I’ve spent ages trying to find some.
I give my bun mostly Oaten hay and a handful of meadow hay as a treat some days.

Your best bet is a stock feed place. I get mine out at Dural, but it depends where you live in Sydney. Dural’s not all that far from me! Also you could try independent pet shops rather than the chains, they some time have more variety!

Thanks, will try to find stock feed place. The only Timothy hay I’ve seen is the imported Oxbow one.

Found this in Wollies (called pasture hay, which is rye grass). It’s on the RSPCA website as one of the recommended hay.

I’m planning of growing Orchard grass (or Catsgrass is the other name) – I know they should be supplied with unlimited amounts with grass hay when it is in hay form – is it also safe to supply unlimited amounts in fresh form?

Oxbow is a very highly recommended and used brand here in Canada (and also the States). I feed my bunny Oxbow pellets and when he was younger, fed him Oxbow Alfalfa hay. Very nutricious. Unfortunately we (the humans) had an allergic reaction to Oxbow alfalfa so we switched to the Kaytee Brand. He was on that Alfalfa before switching to the Timothy version. Look for the Kaytee brand as well, you might find it. Also, if you have access to a farm, you can buy “horse quality” (or hay meant for small animals) hay. Don’t get the hay meant for cattle. Ask for the ones they feed the horses. A lot of people here buy those in bulk and save a lot of money.

Aha! Good tip on the hay quality – I didn’t know that (I live in the city).

There’s a brand called Momi that sell Timothy hay here. It’s imported from US. Looks pricey to me.
The Peter’s brand also small bags of Timothy hay. It’s grown in Australia.

My buns eat oaten hay & do great on just that.
                  A bale (70x40cm) only costs me $10 – $14.

You’ve gotten great advice so far! It is true that timothy is hard to come by (or way too expensive) in Australia… Any grass hay will work though.
