My BunBun is shedding/molting a lot. I also noticed his fur clumps up only around his bottom/butt and tail. I got a slicker brush to help with that because PetSmart said they do not groom bunnies and I do not know where else to take him. I try to brush him, but he doesn’t like to sit still on his back for long so I have to space it out. My concern is, yesterday I was checking him over and I noticed on his butt, behind where his tail lays against his back, he is balding, or losing fur there. What could cause this? I am trying to brush him a little every day and hope that when he has no more clumps, his fur will grow back. His skin is healthy, he does not try to dig or scratch at it. In all he does not scratch a lot at all.

It sounds like a heavy moult. It’s not uncommon for buns to get little bald patches when going through a moult like that.

Ah. So, his fur will grow back? Any suggestions as to what I can do to to prevent his fur from clumping? Some of it clumps so bad brushing doesn’t get rid of it, I have to cut the clump out and it stresses him out.

Yep, bald spots are totally normal during a molt and will grow back normally.

Is his fur clumping because he isn’t cleaning his cecals well enough? Or is it clean fur that is just clumping? If it is clean and still getting matted, I think gently cutting it away is probably the best option.

Have you asked your vet about grooming? Often they will help with mats or sanitary trims on rabbits.

I have the same problem, regarding the mats anyway. Mine hasn’t molted yet so we’ll see. I was looking into bunny groomers but sadly they don’t exist. Or none that I can find anyway LOL. Mine is getting neutered in a few weeks so I am hoping they will help my little fella out while he is under anyway. I am hoping that once the mats are removed I’ll be able to keep up with it, as mine came with mats when I got him. When I took mine for his first vet visit, she removed two mats but left the rest. She made it look so easy! Ha! The main two that remain are on my bunny’s bottom so fat chance I’m gonna get to them, but I keep trying. Also, if anyone has a good mat brush I’d be interested. I have a pro-slicker but it doesn’t touch the mats.

Sounds like my Bindi. He has a bald spot on his back right now from shedding. And he has thick bum fur that mats up too. I use small battery-powered dog clippers to safely shave off mats. I bought mine at Wal-Mart for $10.00. Great investment.

                    What are his cecals?

Sorry took so long to reply, the forums would not let me sign in. Right now I have yet to find a vet that works with bunnies for a reasonable fee.
Right now I try to brush him every day, slowly the mats are coming out. I dunno about using electric clippers, he stresses out enough when I lay him on his back. He is finicky, he does not like being on his back and neither does he like having his nose touched. But he does love when his cheeks are scratched.

Cecals are the special night poos that the rabbit usually eats. (I know right) They are softer and stickier than normal poos, so they could get stuck in his fur more easily.

Ah. I notice him sometimes eating his leavings. But no, he doesn’t have any stuck in his fur, its relatively clean fur that is matted. And ever since I started removing his food and water at night before going to bed, there is hardly any mess for me to clean up when I wake.
