i’m still potty training my bun (it’s going very well by the way!) and yesterday the cage was a mess so i put the bun in it’s carrier while i did that because I don’t want to take any chances with peeing and am still bunny proofing my room. bun didn’t seem upset and was happily eating hay until i returned it home. but today i was changing the litter and it started thumping at me! it know they are posessive of their spaces, but i’ve been changing the litter every morning and todays the first day this has happened. what do you guys usually do (or suggest doing) with an untrained bun in this situation?

I am wondering how old your bunny is, and if it is a male or female? If it has not been neutered/spayed then it may be getting hormonal (males around 3 months, females around 5 months), which would explain the behavior.

Also, were you in contact with another bunny/animal that it could be smelling off you that may make it unhappy?

I am guessing its around that age and I don’t know the gender. I just got it on Thursday and our vet appointment isn’t till Friday so I won’t know anything till then. My roommates have a dog and cat but they’re not allowed in my room and I don’t touch them because I am very allergic so there’s no outside influences that would have caused that reaction. I’m assuming its just territorial but I wonder if there’s anything I can to so I don’t upset the poor thing since I can’t let it roam while I switch out litter.

Getting the hormone issue fixed should help- it helped my bunnies stop getting annoyed with me when I went into their pens.

Is it possible to distract the bun with a few treats (a piece of lettuce, greens, or a couple of small pieces of apple) on the other side of the cage while you change out the litter? It worked for one of mine!

Or you could get a big cardboard box that he cannot jump out of, and fill it with shredded paper that he can dig in- he will have fun and may not be so offended by you.

Good luck and please keep us posted!

I like the box idea! Plus I get a variety of sizes and depths for free trough my job, I’ll try that!
